Woojoy; never gotten an internet before, I don't believe. :)

In all seriousness, though, I'm glad it's not just me. I see people on both extremes of the argument ("JUST ENJOY IT; IT'S JUST A MOVIE!" on the one end, and "IF YOU LIKE IT YOU'RE A RACIST FUCKFACE!" on the other) and I'm just sitting here like, "Um... shades of gray. They exist."

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. There ARE parts of the story that make me cringe. But I was going to see it for the visuals in the first place (animation and movie visual effects are like, two of my biggest can't-stop-talking-about-it-once-I-start subjects).

Also, I tend to avoid racefail discussions in general because being white? I think it's pretty presumptuous of me to try and declare what material that minorities I'm not a part of should or shouldn't find offensive. That would be like men trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't see as misogyny.

I think I like you.

THIS. SO. MUCH. THIS.

What baffles me is getting called a racist for liking the movie, yet I don't think I've ever encountered a movie that's made me dislike the human race like Avatar did. I was like, "Wow, humans kind of suck. I kind of hate us."

(Anonymous) 2010-01-12 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Making you hate the human race doesn't really have anything to do with the race issues. It's like Dances with Wolves where the fantasy is about the--in tihs case human--guy rejecting humans society in favor of the cool eco-friendly mystical minority and then leading the blue people to victory against the humans who aren't as awesome as he are. It's a pretty common majority fantasy.

Ever watch District 9?

I don't think I ever have. Kind of the same thing?

Oh geez, go look it up and rent it like right now.

Basically, aliens came to earth twenty years ago, but they weren't advanced or anything. They were treated as badly as folks in south africa during the apartheid, and were put into slums.

Might not sound like much, but the budget given to the film accomplished so much without being flashy, and ends up really hitting home a lot stronger than Avatar does, I always thought. And I loved Avatar.

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I went to see it because the trailers looked interesting. And in that regard I wasn't particularly disappointed. Like most people who enjoyed the movie (yourself included), the visuals were stunning. It's the first 3-D movie I've seen in a while that actually looked 3-D to me, which was a big plus.

But yeah, I'm in the same boat there. Your comparison with misogyny's dead on. I watch the racefail discussions and try to educate myself as much as one can, but I don't generally participate for fear of saying something unintentionally offensive, because I'm well aware of the fact that I, simply because I am who I am, cannot and will not ever be able to 100% "get it". Regardless, no matter what the argument's about, name-calling and having the "UR WRONG!" "NO U!" discourse is not productive. @__@

Hurr hurr, typing fail. Sorry 'bout that.

About your last sentence. I was talking to my friend, who happens to black, after we had both seen the film, and I was talking about the racial implications. My friend hadn't noticed certain connotations during the viewing (neither had I completely, until I perused some literature on the topic), but as we continued to talk about it, he really got into it, and appreciated me sharing my views, while inputting his own.

I'm a white girl, and I had no problems talking about racefail in Avatar, just like I have no problems encouraging my male friends to think about and consider various forms of underlying misogyny in the media or in society.

While being white means that there are certain things that our race needs to sit down and listen to in order to be educated, that doesn't mean that we should be completely excluded from dialogue, especially dialogue that encourages a grander perspective, on the whole.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-12 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So in other words, you really did have to try to be offended, and you had to teach a minority to be offended by it, too. Interesting.

[identity profile] endingonfire.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, during the film, I kept wondering why this character was coming to seemingly simple conclusions that the natives hadn't thought of, making them appear dimwitted and gullible. I read the article afterwards, which categorized how I felt about the film. I shared the information with him, and he came to his own conclusion. But there's no point in arguing against someone who is going to twist my words around.

[identity profile] stfu-rightnow.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Trying to be offended = fail, stupid and pointless. If you try really hard to look for offensive things, you will find them EVERYWHERE, so what the hell does that prove?
