I started watching the show as something to do with my mom. Just a family thing. I liked the concept and the stories okay; but mostly, I didn't give a damn about the show. Nine never made me care. Not anything he did "wrong"; I just didn't personally connect to him.
I DID connect and care the moment I saw the Tenth Doctor. He's what made me love the character as a whole, and the show. I surely would have stopped watching a long time ago (and I wouldn't be looking forward to the Eleventh Doctor now!) if Tennant had never been Ten.

Yes, I did think David Tennant is/was pretty. (Although I don't think of the Doctor in that sense - that's just kind of weird. I mean, he's the Doctor. A several-hundred-year-old time-traveling alien is not the first being I'd think of nailing to the wall.)
But the thing that solidified it for me was how much more I "got" his Doctor, and that first strong impression was reinforced over the next few episodes. I DID have the advantage of starting out with DVDs (because the show was actually on series three when I started watching), so I could watch them back-to-back.

Only when people interrupt a good discussion with an overrated opinion. Yes, we get it, Ten is Jesus, Gandhi, MLK, and Edward Cullen rolled into one, alright? Is that what Ten fans want us to say? That won't stop Nine fans from existing.
Sorry, this isn't entirely directed at just you, but the overbearing Ten fanbase in general---it feels like every time I read or watch something about the Ninth Doctor, some person bursts in saying, "Guess what? I like Ten best!" Okay, that's fine, I like Ten, too, but do people have to do it every freaking time?
Did you ever realize that maybe Nine was just a little more subtle and alien than Ten? Also, as a lot of folks have said in this giant thread, many people have said they don't like Nine because "he wasn't good-looking enough." Um, the older Doctors weren't all beauty queens, either.
Although I don't think of the Doctor in that sense - that's just kind of weird. I mean, he's the Doctor. A several-hundred-year-old time-traveling alien is not the first being I'd think of nailing to the wall.

I said something because I don't agree that the first Doctor you watch is "your" Doctor. God knows I've met people who started with New Who and ended up feeling that Five or Seven or whoever was "their" Doctor, although I don't know them personally. Oh, and people who saw TEN first, but then went back and discovered Nine to be their Doctor. I suppose I should have said THAT instead, rather than using personal experience, if I didn't want some bitter Nine fan taking a swan dive down my throat?
You thinking that my saying, "There was nothing wrong with Nine, but I didn't connect to his version of the character as well as Ten's, so I don't agree that watching him first makes him 'my' Doctor," is somehow equivalent to bashing Nine, or just randomly jumping in to say Ten was bestest...yeah, keep your own batshit issues to yourself next time.

I have frankly never thought that ANY actor playing the Doctor managed to come off as a genuinely alien being on a consistent basis. So, no. I never really once bought CE as an alien. But then, I barely buy Baker or Tennant as aliens, either.
My personal disbelief just doesn't suspend far enough to believe a white British guy is a 900-year-old Time Lord from Gallifrey. Not really. I can go along with it for the sake of the story, but I feel like it's damn well ridiculous to argue over who was "more" alien. An actual 900-year-old alien being would probably be different from us in a way that we couldn't possibly fathom; no human actor is capable of convincing me that they are that being.
