But... it's kind of part of the plot? As far as we even know so far, since the ending was... well, another headfuck, basically XD But the gist was that the religions of the world all originate from the same source, presumably whatever creatures "Minerva" was...?

And tbh as I collected the codex pages I thought they reflected Altair's growing disillusionment, and his distancing himself from the schools of thought and governing systems which, in his view (as a keeper of one of the Pieces of Eden), are not only all interlinked despite their conflicts, but which seek to force behavioural/value systems on the populace, something which he obviously would hold in distaste following his experiences with Al-Mualim and the Templars. Some of his later pages sounded outright bitter, which is understandable considering what he's experienced in his life.

Wow this comment is long and poorly worded. I hope I got the gist across, at least.

Oh yeah, I know it's part of the plot. And like I said, I have no problem with it. I mean, I've had more blatant attacks on what I should believe and it didn't ruffle me.

It was just the inconsistency of it that bugged me. I understand he sounded bitter, and I don't blame him--he was so into the Creed and then his Master pulled a 180 and everything Altair believed to be 'real' got turned on its head.

From a writer's standpoint, the bit about the pagan religions seemingly making more sense/allowing for more progress (as opposed to monotheistic religions) seemed unnecessary.

I'm a History/Philosophy major and since I apparently have little life outside of academics and free time, here's what I gathered:

- Pagan (or polytheistic religions) seemed to be derived from Minerva's "people who came before." That makes sense.
- Then he goes on to say--or so I felt it implied--that religion in general was an illusion. Sure, that seems right to me in the context of the AC-verse. So we can safely say that all religions (or just the general idea thereof and other 'illusions' were caused by either the Ones Who Came Before or Templars), right?
- ... No? Suddenly I'm reading this rather long spiel whose style felt extremely vague. It wasn't simply "I'm driven against these illusions"--it just stuck out at me as odd. I'm usually numb to those sorts of things and so the fact that it stuck out felt strange.

tl;dr: It was inconsistent in comparison to his other writings and I felt that it was... rather pointless. Now that I've thought about it more (since submitting the secret ages ago), it could have easily been just a bell and/or whistle attachment in an attempt to further develop Altair. I don't know.

Lastly, I apologize if I come off as harsh in this, I'm really tired. |D

And yeah, you do have some good points there, all of which I understand and with which I take no issue.

Oh no, sorry. It was hard to phrase what I wanted to say without, y'know, tl;dring even more than I already did.

I for one actually looked forward to the religious overtones/implications in the AC series despite the shortcomings in both games. It was the abruptness and awkwardness of some of the messages I interpreted from the second game that just didn't sit very well with me.

[identity profile] weallfallout.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
If we're talking about the journal where Altair said that Christianity made no sense and he thought pagan relgious beliefs with multiple gods were more believable... Yeah, that irked me too. As a belief, it's perfectly valid, but there was NO POINT in putting that in there! The rest of the journals gave an idea of what happened to the Creed, the apple, and the world in between the games. And then we had Altair's random ramblings on religion.

If he had just been "GRRR CHRISTIANITY SUCKS" as like, a throwaway line or whatever, that would have made more sense because lol Crusades. But they spent a whole pointless journal on that.

And then I got to the end of the game and realized that no one who makes it that far will take any of it seriously anyway.

It wasn't necessarily any attack on Christianity though. Just monotheistic religion as opposed to pagan religion, despite the message--at least, that I perceived--being that nearly all religions seemed to come from Minerva and her people.

And then I got to the end of the game and realized that no one who makes it that far will take any of it seriously anyway.

- Which is basically the reaction I had. hence the secret and me remaining anonymous. It's not that I take it seriously, it's more like... I'm a little irked by bad writing.

Yeah that's ... probably it.

Whoops! I must've forgotten. Sorry about that. But I think my point that Altair's musings on religion didn't have much of a place in there, espeically since they never went anywhere with it in a future journal.

I get what you mean. And it did irk me more before the ending. But once I reached the ending it was like... I can't do anything but laugh at it. God, I loved AC2, but I will never ever take anything in the series seriously ever again. Just... all that failed pretension.

I know, I LOVE AC2 as well. I mean, I'm replaying it just to screw around in the cities and silently joke to myself about Ezio and his love for the ladies.

The end of the game made me giggle and I do like the ..... er... effort... they put into plot, but the phrasing they used and some of the perspective they tried to reflect on just... didn't fit, I guess.

lol I just bought the deluxe guide today or something and the art is so damn gorgeous.

Imo, expecting a character, who has been raised under certain circumstances, spent most of his life following a certain ideology, and is now seeing the land he calls home being ravaged by a terrible war to be completely impartial, PC, and, most importantly, totally 20th-century about religion is... pretty unrealistic. I could name a dozen games or other media with a worse outlook on any kind of religion than Assassin's Creed. *eyeroll*

Try reading up at my explanations, anon. I phrased what I wanted to say incorrectly. It wasn't at his stance on religion itself but the way it was placed in the game, which I'm also rather certain was still pointed out in the secret.

I could care less about your list as I could myself name a few media that have a worse outlook on religion, but at the very least, they present it with a less passive aggressive, badly written outlook.

Please consider what has already been said in a discussion before you actually enter it next time, but thank you for your comment nonetheless.

Oh right. That. That I've forgotten about. Sort of. Just make sure to watch out for hidden cameras and Communists evil priests in the Vatican if you ever visit.

[identity profile] sargent-snarky.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Reading that comment and then reading some of the discussion that follows it, I actually have to agree with you. About that one codex page on, oh.. what was it, this sudden obsession with monotheism, or something? And how the polytheistic religions made more sense?

Well... I suppose you could say they made more sense (in the AC-verse) to have arisen in light of The Ones Who Came Before (but the same could likely be said of the monotheistic religions and certain uses of the Pieces of Eden), but all the same - that one page from the Codex just... didn't fit.

Although... I wonder if, had we been privy to more of Altair's journal, we might not have seen more such thoughts. If at times he wavered in what he thought about religion or something, that page might not have stuck out, as he probably had many other musings on the subject.
