Once they see that you're seriously gonna update it, they'll come around. The problem I have with multi-chaptered fics is that they always seem to peter out somewhere in the middle. (Knowing Shadows' Fusion, I'm looking at you, you spectacular, on hiatus, bit of FFVII paradise, you.)

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OMFG YES. At both remarks, but especially the one about Fusion.

Some people don't read multi-chaptered fics when there're only some chapters posted, other people only comment after sometime and some of your readers could like it more with the time and rec it, so more people could start reading it by then.

[identity profile] smallearthcat.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I do the same in regards to finishing fic before posting. Then again, I've also taken to just posting it all in one go rather than in chapters (although I admit, I haven't written anything quite that long). But if you're really that worried about it, you could always just do that so the entire thing will be out there.

I agree with the others. I have been burned often enough and have little enough free time that I rarely will read a WIP but will instead wait until it has all been posted. That being said, I can only imagine how it must feel for you in this situation. Good luck with it!

[identity profile] darknyss.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I only read finished fics and will comment only after I read the last chapter.
So, don't give up, people my just be waiting for you to continue posting.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
If you post it, they'll come. I'm currently working on a one-shot collection about the brotherly relationship of the two lovely boys in my icon, and at first, only one person was reviewing each chapter. I've started picking up a few more, though. :)

Just post it, OP. You never know until you try, and hey -- maybe one of us will find that fic of yours, read, and review. You never know.

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Fly-by love of the icon, and also want to say that I would LOVE to read stories about Guy and Luke.

Post it. There might be people reading that just aren't reviewing it, but even if there are only a few followers now, there will be some in the future. Whenever I'm new to a fandom, I check out the older fics, especially the multi-chapter ones. Maybe if you made a note that said the fic is already finished and you're just posting it in chapters you'll get more readers? And I wouldn't worry too much about posting a fic no one wants to read--you know there's at least one person out there who's looking forward to each chapter :D

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Post the whole thing at once. Solves the immediate problem and satisfies the people who won't read incomplete fics.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing, anon—I finish it before I start posting. I say, just keep going. Usually chaptered fics pick up momentum and readers as they go along and as more people are confident that the thing will be finished. And there are a lot of people who never read WIPs even if the writer says they're finished because they like to read in one go.

Good luck!

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Keep updating it. I'm the opposite -- I start writing and posting and then, well...

But if you let people know that it's all written and you're posting it in 'I can digest this in one night' chunks, then you'll get the people who don't like to read wips.

(and check your LJ stats -- you may have more hits than you know about!)

[identity profile] yuuko-uchiha.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean I have seen those fics but I think you might be being to hard on yourself, if you have a good plot, a BETA, and you like it I don't see why not to post it

maybe you are just in the wrong place :S I mean have you tried posting it in different websites? if I knew what fandom you are I could try to help you, but anyway don't limit yourself to fanfiction-net or LJ there are a lot of other places ^^

[identity profile] soy-soc.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Are you equating the number of reviews with the number of readers the fic has? Remember that not everyone comments on a fic they liked, no matter if it is finished or WIP.

Either way, you need to decide if you want to post this fic for them or for you. You should post it for you, the reviews are just a really awesome bonus! It might get more readers once more chapters are posted, too, because it's a lot easier to like a fic when it has a bit more flesh on it, so to speak, and people who like it will rec it to friends who enjoy longer fics that are finished.

You have already written it, so what real harm can it do to post it? The effort to write and finish it has already come and gone. If it is bad, it will blend in with the rest of the bad fic, if it is good it will pick up more readers.

[identity profile] khaman.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Post it anyway, however you feel comfortable doing it. The point of writing it was for you; everyone else's enjoyment is a bonus. And you may be surprised later on by the feedback.

I'll back some other statements; usually the most feedback comes at the END of the story, particularly on anything posted on LJ. The Pit'll give you chapter by chapter feedback (sometimes), but it's still the Pit.

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it just takes a while for people to comment, so I'd say keep posting. New people come into fandoms, so you might get more potential readers.

I very rarely will read a fic that's being posted in parts. I wait until the last part has been posted and then go and look for the master post. The number of fics I haven't read because they lacked a master post is impressive, so remember to do one.

The other things is I'm guessing that you're posting in small chapters of a couple thousand words at a time? A lot of people get annoyed by that. Especially if the fic is finished. 30,000 isn't long enough to really warrant more then 3-5 posts if the fic is finished. I've known a number of people who won't read a finished fic of about that length only posting a few thousand words at a time because it looks like comment whoring. Or if they do read they won't comment.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 03:07 am (UTC)(link)

I wouldn't say that a couple of thousand words is a small chapter, but OP, if your finished fic is 30k words long you can safely post 5000 word chapters and still have a fair amount of them. If you are really worried about people not sticking around for the next chapter, break it off right at a cliffhanger, that way the chances of the readers tuning in at the next chapter are bigger. Which you should do anyway, but don't make it so long that you are breaking the character limit of an LJ post (assuming that you are posting on LJ, that is).

[identity profile] sanestlunatic.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, god, I'm 57,000 words into my first long fic ever, and because I know my track record for finishing things, I am NOT going to post anything till it's finished - but I'm deathly afraid nobody's going to read it. (Especially without any of the fandom's popular pairings.)

Most times, it seems like you've gotta build momentum. If you post it, fans will come. XD Probably you'll end up some fandom cult classic, bet you! If you really feel awkward, maybe post more rapidly? As in, post two chapters at a time, once a month, or something. That way the story will get out there faster, it still gives you time to accumulate fans, and anyone who comes in later won't be as overwhelmed as if you'd put the whole thing up at once.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I always set a goal of completely finishing multi-chaptered fics before I start to post them

God bless you, OP. You are awesome for this.

[identity profile] asimaiyat.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
I wrote, and never posted, 20000 words of a fic that I really liked before realizing that a) it wasn't a good fit for the fandom, and b) neither was I. That made me really sad. :( I loved the canon, but the fandom was not a culture that worked for me. I hope that you find an audience for your epic!

Are you posting your fic for the joy or writing, or because you just want someone to pay attention to you? It seems rather unclear.
