I like the books, too, and just got back from seeing the movie a couple of hours ago - and I loved it. It's fun and dynamic but I don't think that RDJ's Holmes is "cooler" than the one from the books - he is supposed to be a boxer and gets quite a lot of action in the books too. Keep in mind that the original Holmes is not the older sharp-witted yet rather stationary guy in tartan from the previous film versions - he's just lots of black letters on white paper and thus open to wide interpretation.

Now, the slash subtext in the movie is a different matter entirely. It's practically not subtext anymore.
