So, really. Who are you to say how one lives their life?

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
IAWTS. Bawww I want the Doctor to save me Bawww.

Come on. You're an embarrassment to the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. Ok. So all those awesome new people I meet at conventions must be figments of my imagination. And eating a strange new restaurants and walking around cities I might otherwise never visit is not adventurous. I guess I never knew that going to conventions makes me lazy and unadventurous. I guess I'll have to stay home and watch some American Idol or something.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly people in fandom don't do anything other than fandom things and don't have jobs or adventures of any kind. I'm so glad you came by with this amazing insight, anonymous.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a major issue with your sweeping generalization of "most people in fandom". That's bullshit. Maybe one person out of a hundred, but certainly not most.

And honestly, there's nothing wrong with that one percent. Some people would rather live in a fantasy world than the real world, and what's so bad about that? If it makes them happy, and it's not putting them in danger, what's so wrong about it?

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone who goes to a convention is convinced they're going to marry an actor or a character, some of us just enjoy the chance to hang out with like minded people.

Passionate fan =/= Nutjob.

[identity profile] duathkaimelar.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha. I love how your TL;DR implies that most people in fandom MUST BELIEVE they are going to marry an actor/actress and don't have lives. That's a wonderful assumption.

Regardless of any of that, however, it's still not any of your business how anyone lives their lives and/or enjoys fandom.

[identity profile] taelynhawker.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS.

And...

Oh my god, that icon. I adore it.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really see how cons fit into this. Cons are great places to be social, meet new people, and go on ~crazy adventures.~

Also
>get a life
hurrdurr I'm sure nobody here has ever heard THAT one before

You're so concerned about this. This must be because . . .

But it iiiiiiis!

Don't you see the OP is just trying to make us all realise how wrong we are and how we should all stop enjoying ourselves in a harmless fashion and get back to reality RIGHT NOW?!

GOD!

*shakes her head*

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. I'm of two minds — wrt my own life, yes, I don't want to be stuck hoping to get my years-too-late Hogwarts letter or whatever instead of going out and doing things for myself and making my own life and my own story.

But you know, not everyone wants the same things as you or as me or as the guy who lives across the street. And although I haven't gone to a con since high school, I assume you must not have ever been to one, since as far as I can tell, they're all about having fun and meeting people and getting off your ass.

So STFU, asshole.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What about people who "changed their lives for fandom" by getting into shape because some character is their "fit!spiration," or sorting out their sexuality or coming out or something because something in fandom gave them the courage to do so? A profound impact doesn't have to be a negative one.

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS!

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Second this!

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Your painting a hobby with millions of participants with one paintbrush is more then a little disturbing.

On a personal level, yes, fandom is part of my life. It is my main hobby, and it's something I get alot of joy out of and also an outlet to escape in when RL gets too sucky. That being said, I own my business, date, go to alot of events, love to try new things....and having my little happy place in fandom actually makes me BRAVER to try more IRL things! So I guess that it would make it my therapy too. And I refuse to apologize for that.

[identity profile] roxiful.livejournal.com 2010-01-16 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, why so butthurt OP?

"Most people in fandom" don't truly believe they're going to marry an actor. >:\ That's a small, uber-crazy subset. The rest of us just have harmless crushes and/or just have fun enjoying the show and making friends who share the same fondnesses. I stayed away from this show for YEARS because the fandom was so terrifying, and then joined only to find that it's a small group of legit-crazies making everyone look bad and it was far more largely populated with fun, silly, nice, not-srs-crazies. Don't paint us all with the same Crazy Brush!

Whenever I read secrets like this I wonder if sports fans condemn everybody like this as regularly as fandom does. Why don't you get up off your ass and make your own football game! Your heroes didn't get to where they are sitting on their asses!

- 2-D love interests will never break your heart and are fully worthy of being loved. Better than real, etc.

- Do you judge people who, say, vacation in traditional touristy places the same way? Going to a con is just another way to have fun with people with similar interests and lots of excellent events set up. And if you want to get on a plane or get a hotel it costs a lot, but y'know? It's worth it.

And yeah, merchandise/DVDs get expensive. But so is going out to restaurants or buying expensive clothes or countless other things people spend money on. We're not fantasizing about finding a pokemon in the grass... okay, we are, but we know they aren't real. XP

[identity profile] phaetonschariot.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
icuthar strawman. Not everyone overly invested in fandom is insane, you know. Some of them just (gasp!) enjoy it.

Why no hate for the people who obsess over and spend hundreds of dollars on sports teams? Do you know how many injuries and deaths are attributable to sports, both due to playing them and violent altercations among fans? Or what about people who go to every concert given by a band, or who spend all their money on clothes, or books, or horse dressage events? Are they more worthwhile than fandom or something?

circle jerk

[identity profile] minalskare.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
that's basically what this secret is.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pleased all the stfu this secret needed has already been posted.
