That bruise was one of the more subtle things to that episode (RTD is not known for his subtlety, lol) but it was the thing that stood out most to me.

I hated him for being such a bastard (but loved him for his insaneness...), but i hated her more for putting up with it. Their relationship was so fucked up. He used her and i'm glad she had the courage to shoot him, even though i would've liked an alternate S4 with The Doctor and The Master travelling around together.

That bruise was the only thing that made me feel guilty for liking him. I didn't mind when he killed 1/10 of the world's population just because he could, or when he enslaved the rest of it, because that's such an outrageously evil overlord thing to do. That bruise, however, that was real. That happens every day.

Yeah, I've got a weakness for evil, loving couples. But I hate what he did to her.

That said, I remember reading a fic awhile back where he was actually banking on a kind of Xanatos Gambit--he knew the Doctor would defeat him soon and he knew he'd need a way out, and the "abuse" (in quotes here because it wasn't that in the fic) was part of the plan that he had shared with his wife and she had agreed to, usually accented with make-up and all, to make it believable when she shot him...

Yeah, it sounds confounded and all, but I liked that head-canon better.

Oh gosh, it's been...years. I don't remember in the slightest. It was on the archive though, I think. That...time lords and teaspoons or something? So searching for Master/Wife fic around the air-date might get it...

I am almost sure that bruise was not intentional. Poor Alexandra Moen just had some sort of an accident and they couldn't cover it properly - but they tried. The bruise wasn't supposed to be seen on screen.

No, I think I read an interview with her and she said make-up people hadn't been able to cover it properly but they tried. But I wish it was planned because it, as OP said, really show what a monster Master is and was much better than randomly killing millions of anonymous people.

You're misremembering. If you watch the confidential, the behind the scenes footage, RTD's book or some of his and AM's interviews, pretty much any behind the scenes info about Lucy, they've discussed in detail the reason they gave her the fake bruise and the domestic violence implications in the script (including the implication of forced threesome scene).

That's the only reason why I felt a bit guilty for still liking him after Last of the Time Lords. She looks so different and weak there, it was almost painful to watch :/
