You know, that just makes you sound really dumb.

A book or a series being long is no reason not to read it, unless you don't have time to, and being in fandom, you clearly have time.

In this case... you really ought. It's an enhancement if you're familiar with both canons.

The lack of time is what keeps me from reading Harry Potter :( I want to, I really do but school and work take up a LOT of time. (I'm not in any fandoms either, I just really enjoy the HP movies.)

I agree though, if you have the time and love the fandom that much, it wouldn't hurt to read the books.

What gets me with the people that lie about it is that they actually so often give themselves away in little details, like not knowing what happened to Frodo's parents. Hir fandom friends are probably just too polite to say anything.

Oh, I agree. It's just embarrassing to get caught in a lie anyway, but books will always have some details that the movies don't touch upon. I'd rather experience everything, if that makes any sense.

Some people can't stay focused that long to get through books like that. It's not that they don't have the time, it's that they just can't sit down and read a book series that's THAT huge. They'd become disinterested or frustrated if they try. Nothing wrong with the person for it, and it's fine if they just want to enjoy the movies.

This. I find most of this thread condescending and unsympathetic.

I read a lot, but I have serious trouble reading something I'm not really interested in, or something that just seems to go on for forever. I don't finish books all the time. I figure if you're not enjoying it, why torture yourself? Reading is supposed to be fun.

I think what sounds funny about it is it's not like they're saying they checked them out or started them but just couldn't get into them and didn't see a need to torture themselves, or even that they just had no real wish to read them and didn't care enough to force it--which I can totally understand. It's that they're hugely into the fandom but are lying about having read the books because they just can't read anything that long. Which does sound just like "I don't read anything over X pages long." I suspect they really meant something more like the former, that they just don't have any burning desire to read them and don't feel like assigning it to themselves.

I can totally see how someone could read it that way, so that's a fair point, and that would be really stupid if someone set a max number of pages they'll read.
