Even though watching the original is like nails on a chalkboard for me, I'm inclined to agree with you. The US version has been on MUCH longer than the UK version -- who's to know what could have happened and developed with the UK version if it had been on this long.

I agree with the OP's frustration with people who act as if British TV is inherently better, though. There have been some FAB Brit shows over the years, but also some godawful crap too.

Not only that, but the good stuff on British TV is no better than the good stuff on American TV, and there are several US-produced shows that I think have no rival for quality in the UK. I enjoy several BBC and ITV shows, and I think they're quality stuff, but they're no better than anything I watch on US TV. (I'm picky, no matter where the show comes from.)

Agreed.

I disagree slightly, because I do think British TV allows a bit more license for shows to be innovative or new or take creative risks, whereas a lot of American networks are very mistrustful of such things, with the result a lot of American shows feel very formulaic.

Obviously there are some very fine American shows, and some awful British shows, so this is a generalisation, but I do think there are some fantastic British shows which never would have even been made in America because they would have been thought too much of a risk. Like, for example, I doubt a show like the UK version of the Office would ever have been made as an original American show because it's too unlike a conventional sitcom. The fact the American remake is much more like a conventional sitcom kind of supports this.

TL;DR I think both American and Britain make good TV, but the way the British market works sometimes serves creators - and thus viewers - better.

I disgree. Kind of. I think this is only true depending on what network you're talking about. On American TV your mileage will vary, especially when you start moving up into cable and premium cable channels.

You don't watch a lot of American TV, do you? Shows like Sopranos, Mad Men, The Wire, Pushing Daisies, Carnivalè, Deadwood, Dexter, and many others are very far from typical syndicated fare and all lasted more than one season. UK TV is rarely as offbeat or weird as the more atypical series listed, and I think the writing and overarching narrative in several of those HBO shows are better than anything I've seen on UK TV. The best UK TV is mostly standard fare done well. Life on Mars is far less weird than Lost, for instance, and less sci-fi as well (though it's one of my favorite series from either countries); Dr Who is somewhat reflective of original Star Trek (which I know postdates original Dr Who, but I'm referring to the current reboot), MI-5 (which I dislike quite a lot) is a decent facsimile of 24, etc.

Anyway, I think the assertion that UK TV writers are allowed to take more risks and be more innovative that US TV writers is just patently untrue. Also, if Curb Your Enthusiasm can be as successful as it is, the original Office could most assuredly be successful. There's a huge variety of tone, subject, and quality on US TV, and not all of it is shit like Big Bang Theory and CSI.
