Yes, she was put on a fridge, and it's a fact. But then she Got Better.
I'm glad other writers believed in her and continued writing Babs as a powerful female character, not despite the wheelchair, but along it.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)And would it make any difference if it was, say, Talia that shot her? Can a woman be "fridged" by another woman? Or to harm another woman? Because no one seems to consider it such even if the situations are the same.
Re: op
Have you read the Women in Refrigerators page and/or Wiki entry?

Re: op
(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 12:05 am (UTC)(link)I think there's a difference in harming a "female character" and harming a character whose role happens to be such that to harm them would be adventageous to someone's goal. Like Superman's parents--why would it be seen as so very different to hold Martha hostage than Thomas? And if they were BOTH caught and threatened, then what would it be called?
In short, I think there's a difference between a "female victim" and a victim who just happens to be female.
Re: op
It helps to think of it not on a case-by-case basis, but as a cumulative effect. In an even trade off, whether it was Uncle Ben or Aunt May who was killed as a plot device to trigger Pete's pain wouldn't make a difference because it would have precisely the same influence. However, if it had been May it would have added to a casualty count which is disproportionately higher for female characters than male. That's where the difference comes in - not in the single event, but in the overall trend.
Re: op
It's even more disturbing when you take in account that comics do not write themselves: Storylines are created by writers, and a huge amount of comic writers are male.
