So she unfridged herself?

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Moore fridged the character. Ostrander and Yale unfridged her (and WHY isn't Suicide Squad out in a giant collected edition, I want to know? I have all the original issues, but it's much easier to read in collection.)

Fridging is done by writers, not characters.

...I was speaking metaphorically.

So was I? I mean, in this case, they didn't literally put her in a fridge.

I'm not very informed on superheroes, so I'm sorry if this is ignorant and possibly stirring up old wank, but The Killing Joke was a one-shot graphic novel, right? Not a continuous running Batman book - so couldn't the editors back then have made the decision that the events in The Killing Joke wasn't canon proper but something out-of continuity?

Or maybe they didn't do that kind of thing back then, I dunno. Just wondering if Moore might not have intended her crippling to be accepted as permanent canon. Not that I'm saying it's much of an excuse.

Moore most definitely did not intend her crippling to be accepted as permenant canon--at least that's what he's always claimed. He thought it was a one-shot that was out of regular continuity. The editors didn't have to make it part of the continuity, but decided to "cripple the bitch" permenantly and make it canon. TKJ was a straight out fridging story regardless, but it didn't have to part of continuity.

It was in "prestige format", sort of halfway between a regular floppy and a graphic novel. Since Alan Moore was the writer, I would think that he couldn't care less whether it was canon or not, but it was quickly incorporated into regular canon by the editors. Either way, the original comic was a giant fridging of the first order, but regular continuity more than made up for it by giving us Oracle. Ostrander and Yale, who made Oracle, were a husband and wife team of writers who led their comic (Suicide Squad) with the amazing Amanda Waller and always had a great gender balance in the team. Kim Yale has since passed away, sadly, but John Ostrander is still writing.
