(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 04:20 am (UTC)(link)Unfortunately, it's already broken so many records, which just makes me feel like no one cares about changing the whitewash of Hollywood because they're placated by pretty pictures. So if it makes me look like a "frothing fanatic", then so be it; it's something that I think too many people are ignoring, and thus supporting the recurrence of these types of trends.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 04:51 am (UTC)(link)I understand what you mean about changing things, but I really don't think looking like a frothing fanatic helps anything. If you want to change something about the world or society, you have to make people care. You have to make people want to change. Are they going to want to care about the points you raise and the things you want to change if you tell them they can't enjoy or watch something that they find entertaining? Are they going to sympathize with you or understand your viewpoint if you go on the immediate attack, or purposely make them out to be ignorant fools? Racism and bigotry pervades every part of our society, it's a sad fact, but I really don't think much of the idea of telling people they can't watch or enjoy aspects of something that contains troublesome issues.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-17 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)I've never told someone that they can't enjoy a film, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to explain to them why I think it's a bad film. I've talked to a number of other people who have seen it and agreed with me, who in turn tell people not to waste their money. Is that what constitutes as an attack these days? I don't know, but I've never called anyone an idiot because they liked the movie. You're generalizing by saying that my vocal hate for Avatar = me hating/insulting everyone who likes it. Sure, I'll go into a post and talk about how I didn't like it, but usually that means fans will jump on my ass about it. I'll defend my opinion, and that's that. I'm only as frothing a fanatic as the fans who engage me.

(Anonymous) 2010-01-18 05:33 am (UTC)(link)You don't have to outright call someone an idiot or a bigot to imply they are. Maybe you don't ever jump on someone for saying they enjoyed it, maybe you never go on the immediate attack when Avatar discussions pop up. But I doubt it. I've seen people who do exactly that sort of thing complain about being called on it and say they're not doing it at all. It's not helpful, it's not constructive, it's just annoying.
One last thing, a movie having underlying racist themes is nowhere on the level of a company that abuses and harms real people. I'd also like to know if you really think boycotting is going to stop these things from happening. If everyone boycotted a certain thing at the same time until it changed its ways that would be one thing, but as it goes there is only a group of people that do it, which fucks with the prices which in turn fucks with the wages and conditions of those working for the company. You can't just stop associating with those who've done wrong and expect it to help anything. Doing so only lets you keep your hands clean and honestly claim that you're not part of it. If you actually want to change something, don't boycott, don't just say that it's wrong and you condemn it, make suggestions on how to fix things.
