Asthma is very scary -- my husband has chronic asthma (one of his lungs atrophied as a child) and his attacks scare the shit out of me.

Heck, I think I'm gonna try that next time I feel sick. (Nothin' near as bad as asthama, but the idea of Bones being the healer is kinda appealling.) Glad it worked for you.

Not that you don't ALSO have asthma, but it may be worth investigating. I have major anxiety problems and one of the symptoms I get -- even without necessarily even FEELING anxious or stressed -- is a sensation that I can't get enough air into my lungs no matter how deeply I try to breathe, and I can't breathe that deeply anyway because as soon as my lungs are half full I feel like my body's already used up all the oxygen and I need to breathe out and back in again. It's like always being out of breath. It isn't scary to ME because I know what it is and I know it's not going to hurt me, but that... is rather similar to asthma, no?
If just being in a quiet environment focusing on something calming fixed it, I think your problem may be JUST stress in those instances, not asthma. Since it's something that is severe enough to impact your ability to function normally, you may want to speak to a doctor or psychiatrist about considering approaching that and working out some sort of treatment for it. I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 20's, but like you, I'd worked out ways to deal with it since I was a child, and one of those ways was to focus intently on whatever my favourite story was at the time. And most of the time, that may be all you need to do -- but you might also want to speak to a doctor who can teach you about breathing techniques and other coping methods. And if you still get stress-triggered attacks severe enough to mess with your ability to function, you may want to consider medication. I take a low dose of Xanax when my other coping methods don't work or I'm in a situation when I can't just step away and zen for a while.
