Oh. What are you taking then?

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, so, you very selectively looked at my profile, then?

I'm doing IPCR.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Selective reading... yeah.

You notice I said I stopped doing English as a major?

That'd be one of the reasons. ;D

(Also, I had to google IPCR. >.>)

Lol, so you didn't really pay much attention to much at AU? All I get is acronyms for stuff and endless time spent on the website trying to figure out what the undergrads were talking about haha

I'm glad I didn't go to Georgetown, that sounds like it would've been even worse for me *shudder* Guess it's a crapshoot when you want a DC school.

Well... for one thing, the last time I took classes there was actually like... ergh... jesus... 5 years ago. >.o god I feel old. Also... I didn't go there by design -- I ended up there entirely by accident. After I finished high school, I had NO IDEA what to do -- my school didn't have a college counselor, my parents were working and therefor absent in the process, so I never actually officially applied anywhere. SOOOO I ended up taking classes at AU through that thing they let you do where you can take classes without being accepted at the school. I took about 3 and then applied officially and then got half way through my sophomore year by the time i figured out I was wasting my time and my parents' money and I quit.

So... no, I never knew much about the school outside my own intended major, and I didn't live on campus and never made friends with anyone in any of my classes so I never really heard anyone talk. The most I did was hang around in the coffee shop in the school if business building (I think that's what it was?) and chat with the baristas and read a lot.

...and I smoked pot with some chicks from one of my classes once or twice. It didn't agree with me, thought they were fun.

I found a much, MUCH better place for myself a couple years after quitting AU, studying in a field I can handle at a school I love.

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
What school/field is that?

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Northern Virginia Community College, I'm in my last semester finishing the Historic Preservation certificate program. :3

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
So, is that where you preserve art and documents or where you preserve historical sites?

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Both! And then some! I've been on archaeological digs and stuff, and then I've also done archival work and a little curator work. I'll be starting an internship with the National Park Service soon, which is AWESOME for me. :3

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, cool. I was a Classics major for a bit, so I have an appreciation for some of that haha

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
I WANTED to be a Classics major for a while! Ever since I saw The Invention of Love by Tom Stoppard and apprenticed with a Greek painter for a while... I thought that would be just SO great except that I love and NEED science too much to have art be my major in any area...

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
But Classics really isn't about art. It's actually far more of a history sort of thing. There are lots of Classicists who focus on a scientific aspect, either modern science in dealing with stuff like what you're doing or ancient science.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
I would say that it is about art -- as much about art as it is about science, but more about language.

I have my own relationship with language, and with art, but ultimately studying the Classics as a major just wasn't my path. I prefer a different angle on it all, that's all. :3

By the way, do you live near AU? Because if you do, you probably live within a few blocks of where I live during most of the week. ^^

[identity profile] mneiai.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
I would definitely not say it's "more about language". There are lots of majors where you need to learn another language to do any work in your subject area, it's more incidental. Someone can major in Latin or Greek, if that's what he wants his focus to be, but there are plenty of Classics majors in plenty of colleges where whether or not you even have to take a language depends on your specific track.

I live relatively close to AU.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
Heeeee, you totally probably live within a few blocks of one of my houses, then. ^^

I like the Classics well enough, but I feel I'd be doing their Art a disservice not to take it all the way, which... I just don't want to do.
