I liked the ending, but I still feel like I'll have to watch the series a few more times with a much more critical eye to understand their relationship. At all. I don't hate her or anything, but I'm not a big fan of Yukari in general; it's so shallow (I say, of a series about fashion) but I can't get over how much worse she looks to me with the bangs.

Read the manga. It's only five volumes. The anime seriously downplayed Hiro's role in both Yukari's and Arashi's/Miwako's life, added things they shouldn't have (wtf, why did they make George cry when they broke up? the entire point was... eh, whatever), neglected to mention that Yukari ended up marrying Hiro, and in general tried to present George as more of a nice guy than he actually is.

I read a few volumes of the manga a looong time ago and never got to finishing it, I really should. I should get around to Gokinjo Monogatari while I'm at it, it's not like I'll be busy reading new NANA updates or anything. I thought it was fairly clear in the anime that they were married though, or at least as serious as that.

Yes, this, basically. Plus Hiro reprimanding Arashi for his stupidity > Arashi singing his emo out. What the hell was that for.

Yeah, that was so much fail. In the manga Hiro pretty much opened Arashi's eyes and pushed him into the right direction, while in the anime Arashi just sang a sad song and suddenly everything was okay.

Well, it wasn't that simple. She knew that if she went with him she would've ended up like his mother and he would've lost all respect for her. Plus she'd had enough of him not confiding in her and generally treating like a pretty doll but nothing more.

The irony is, of course, that so many people are disappointed with the ending because she didn't end up with him. Way to miss the point.

This is my favourite manga, most of my friends love it too, and we all agree the ending is pretty much perfect. Certainly not in a fairytale happy ever after way, but it suits the story so well in all its bittersweet glory.
However, the ending of the anime adaptation missed the point in such a spectacular way, it's almost painful for me, being so attached to the original. I hate it with a passion. The anime portrays it as George leaving behind a broken Yukari that will never get over him. In the manga, they break up because he acknowledges he'll never love her as much as he loves fashion, and she loves him but is not willing to give up her own dreams just to be a part of someone else's. And she realizes Tokumori may not be a dashing bishonen with blue hair, but is a much better match for her, while in the anime they don't even mention they end up getting married.
Since you say "watch" but use an illustration from the manga, I honestly don't know which one you're talking about.

Yes, exactly! This is what I hated most about the anime. It's like they deliberately missed the point in order to play the story as an oh so sad romance.

Oh man. I loved the manga but didn't finish watching the adaptation and this comment makes me sad.

Yeah, agree with all the people above. The manga is a lot better at making sense. Hiro was a lot more important in it, and you see more of George's flaws.

This is why I love Ai Yazawa.

I agree so hard with this secret. A lot of people really missed the point of the ending.

THIS. ParaKiss is one of the reasons I prefer josei manga to shojo.

ITA! My favourite thing about ParaKiss (and Ai Yazawa manga in general) is that it shows a relationship that doesn't work out in the end. Because, let's face it, most don't. At least this one ends with both of them are pretty good terms with each other and both ready to acheive their dreams even if they have to do so seperately.

I definitely agree! It was a powerful message to send for the importance of Yukari's independence, even if it was portrayed differently from the manga.
But then I also pretty much hated George, so this was also better for me. :p

I don't mind that Yukari didn't end up with George (in fact, I'm rather happy about it), but I didn't like that the anime made it seem as if she were settling for Hiro. It annoyed me because 1) anime!Hiro was about as important to her life as a pillow would be, and 2) settling is never a good way to approach a relationship.

I never got my hands on the last volume of the manga, but everything leading up to it hinted at a similar though far more satisfying conclusion. But YMMV.

I feel so bad I missed this day of F!S because I AGREE SO HARD. George wasn't even really boyfriend material anyway, they were two different kinds of people and it wouldn't have worked out. Obviously she made the right choice, but try telling that to the hordes of immature teenagers whining over the [realistic] ending of this series! (Not that all teenagers are immature, but let's face it, most of them are -- I should know, I work with them every day.)

Oh, man. Paradise Kiss restored my faith in manga. I love it so very much, and the ending it what sealed the deal for me.
