Japan fan has yet to see one who's vicious.

Or more than two fans of him, period.

I dunno, I've only met viciously anti-Japan people, his fans seem to be pretty nice.

In any case, I like him a lot, mostly because he's so very Japan, flaws and all. (And people call him a Mary Sue and say that Himaruya doesn't rip on his own country enough... wtf.)

Same here. Not my fav character though, but he does have his moments. Just hate seeing him bashed is all.

Um, implying fans of Japan are jerks when you yourself say it's hersay is really just wanking them. Which is what you don't want happening to you, right?

Weird. Maybe it’s because his unwillingness to admit the horrible stuff he’s done is a major character flaw, and you realize that. Or something.

I don't know why people would not like him because his portrayal "forgets" his nastier side. Isn't Japan one of the only characters in Hetalia who is actually violent toward another one (attacking China with a katana and the scar that results)? I'd say that is sort of significant in a series that basically ignores/glosses over the horribleness of history as a whole.

It is significant. Himaruya made this strip, he doesn't pretend like Japan is guiltless, like people accuse him of doing.

What gets me is that Japan haters act like every other country is completely innocent of war crimes, treatment of foreigners, civil rights, etc. Way to gang up on one character, guys.

I don't think that any fan of the Japan-character (to differentiate from the country) can in all honesty defend Japan-the-character-as-Nation against the darker parts of history without looking foolish. Especially since it's a WWII-based comic.

I can understand, I suppose, Japan-haters. I'm not a big fan of Poland's character and I'd rather avoid him; I suppose if I were inclined to theatrics I might indulge in them. And there are better-publicized historical reasons to hate Japan than there are for those countries who came out of WWII as "good guys", so if one is already inclined to dislike a certain character in Hetalia, they may search for historical reasons to quote for their dislike.

I am personally actually less concerned about countries that have widely acknowledged (and therefore from a fandom perspective not ignorable) human rights problems records and more concerned about those whose records don't get discussed - France and Algeria come to mind.

So, in other words, I think your attitude is healthy: yes, Japan is an interesting character. Yes, he's fun and funny. But you cannot ignore that as a character representing a nation he's done some very bad things. And you're not.

tl;dr: Stop worrying and enjoy your fandom. Don't let people ruin your fun - but don't get carried away with your squee.

But why would anyone "defend him"? If you look at the manga, he has flaws and as the anon a bove said, he's one of the few characters whose "darker side" or however you want to call it is acknowledged. If you look at actual history, most characters are bastards (which is why I'm not a fan of characterization based on actual srs bzns history, not in this manga).

If you like him, you like him with his flaws. At least I've never seen a fan of Japan claiming that he's innocent and has never done anything wrong. But Hetalia is a light-hearted gag manga that doesn't dwell on the ugly side of history, so I think it's perfectly fine if someone doesn't take Japan-the-character seriously and just likes him because he's a funny take on Japan-the-country.

I don't exactly hate Japan, but I think he's the most boring character from Hetalia. :/ And I really tried liking the character, because I love Japanese culture (not in a weeaboo way. Well, maybe a little...) etc., but it didn't work. He bores me to no end. Even his darker side (not the real cruelties committed by Japan in WWII etc., these are far from, uuuh that sounds so very wrong, "boring") does nothing to me, though I usually prefer reading about the dark sides of characters.

But I'm yet to encounter any vicious Japan fans. =| I don't know, anon, I don't know.
