Hey now. I have about 250 "real" friends on facebook- that is to say, people who I at one point in time was more than an acquaintance with, even if I now don't talk to them- and probably another 100 or so from games. There are a lot of games- Mafia Wars, Castle Age, etc- where you can have up to 500 friends in your army/mob/whatever and get bonuses and additional help from them. This is probably an indication that I spend too much time playing facebook games, but not that I don't have real life friends too.

I have a lot of friends in real life. Many of them are friends with me on Facebook. Most of those FB friends have zero interest in FB games. You need game friends to advance in the games.

I seriously doubt you're fooling anyone. I never assume people with 200+ friends are popular — usually it's pretty obvious that either they're friendwhores who looked up everyone they went to elementary school with/sat next to in the coffeeshop/threw up on at a party, or, like you, they friended people for games.

When I first joined facebook, I added everyone I knew from High School. I kind of regret it because I never talk to any of them. Mainly I had added them all because I was in a competition to get more friends on MySpace at the time, but this was back in the day when you needed a college email to get into facebook, so the friend I was in the competition with, who didn't go to college, couldn't compete with me. Now I use facebook to talk to maybe 10 people, with maybe 10 more facebook friends I care about who I don't talk to on facebook regularly. Nevertheless I know or have known all of my 250+ friends IRL.

um...that's pretty normal. I just filter them to "gaming adds" versus my real friends. Mafia Wars practically *demands* a huge list if you want to advance. I always assume that's why people have big lists.
