I think RTD honestly wanted all of his characters to end up happy

Ugh... I hate when someone tries to justify a pairing with "the writers wanted him/her to be happy". Why does happy have to mean "in a relationship"?

I was actually going to reply to that same quote you used, asking the anon if they've come back from E-Space yet? Because that sentiment so, so, so, does not compute from the DW/TW that I've been watching.

I'm certainly not denying that all of RTD's characters go through hell and back during their time on Who, but if you look at the actual endings to every one of the arcs of the REGULARS (I'm not talking about background characters, just companions), they all have some sort of happy ending. Of course, because usually their life sucked up until that point in some way, the ending isn't perfect, but it is RTD's version of happy.

I could give all the examples, but if you are a regular vieuwer and can't come up with them yourself, you really are watching a different show. Rose, Martha, Donna and Jack are all shown reasonably happy in their last moments on Who, and even Christina, Jackson Lake and Astrid (okay, you can argue this one) end up happy.

I realise it is a lost fight to try and defend RTD to the majority of online-fandom, but I happen to be one of the people who do like most of what he has done.

I disagree about Rose and Donna; Rose's last interaction with the Doctor in the timeline had her being left with a pale imitation of the Doctor and from the way she reacted when the real Ten left, I don't think she was happy with that at all. Donna couldn't remember any of her adventures and married the man her grandfather said she was settling for. I don't see happiness in that.

THIS. rose and donna are my favorite companions, so their ending just IRK me. i guess, on some level, i can understand rose's ending, because they really were trying their best to make everyone happy, even if in the end it just doesnt quite work. but donna? NO, OMG NO. its a travesty, her 'happy ending'. UGH. just terrible.
