I was hoping for another Martha/Mickey fan. I agree with you completely, by the way. I loved them together before EoT and I definitely love them now.

You're not alone. Trust me. I squee!d muchly when Martha/Mickey were officially onscreen as a couple.

Furthermore, I don't see any validation in the show that supports the OP's claim. You can be angry about the lack of screen time devoted to their romance or that it's just RTD pushing them together for the sake of a word pun, but I see no evidence to support that race was the deciding factor in Martha/Mickey coming together.

Especially in a fandom (DW/Torchwood/SJA) where the only other Black/Black couple are Martha's parents, and even her father had a white girlfriend when we first met him. I see no inclination on RTD's part that shows how he just has to pair Black people with other Black people. Quite the opposite in fact.

In this instance, I think it's the fans who are doing ALL of the heavy lifting.

I never minded the idea of Mickey/Martha; in fact I wrote a fic about him them after their first meeting. I also, however, liked the idea of Martha/Tom. I don't think the pairing is about race either.

I think it's about the fact that Russell T Davies can be incredibly lazy when it comes to character and plot development, and thinks he can get away with just chucking two people together without any real foreshadowing because he suddenly decides it's a good idea, regardless of the fact he's already hooked one of the characters up with someone else. He expects everyone to throw away everything that's come before just as easily as he does on a whim. That is not a sign of a good writer IMO.
