It's called "writing nuanced characters" and unlike some companies who shall remain nameless, Bioware is good at it. Is he a perfect character? No. Because perfect characters are boring.

THANK YOU. ILU. I was pretty much just like "Whatever" at the secret until I read THAT LINE. Then I was like WTF NO. Pay attention to the character a little bit.
