Some people really don't know how to either read or convey interest, so I don't see that as a sinister thing to pass along. It's just human communication.
It's really more just the tone of the book; which basically frames women as, like I said, animals to read, track down and snare. Or, alternatively, something alien and strange which require elaborate decoding. Which I found creepy and very DNW.
Although there's totally humour in it, too. Possibly I'm just in a touchy mood this week because I've had to read a lot about messed-up stuff for my sociology class, and this totally just slots right into that.
