The first book I read by her (Wideacre) read like 18th century V.C. Andrews, so imagine my lack of surprise.

I'm not fond of what she did in The Other Boleyn Girl. Henry the Eighth made that shit up so that he could get an heir and I don't like seeing his actions validated in any way. It'd be like making a film where the people hung in the Salem Witch Trials were actually witches and ignoring the injustice that was actually done. I don't know. Maybe I'm being too Serious Business about this. Still, it bothers me.

I definitely see what you mean. I enjoyed the book as guilty pleasure fiction, but I did not enjoy at all how Gregory attempted to portray it as semi-serious. She does an injustice to the social historical context, which I'm sure she realizes, but unfortunately it seems to be in vogue for authors of historical fiction to try to warp their stories into fact. The more debate it stirs the more copies you'll sell :(

I'm kind of with you. I love that there's scandal, but not in a horrifically-bad-romance-novel kind of way. In the Constant Princess, I like the sections where King Henry VII had creepy thoughts about Catalina.

God knows it's not for historical accuracy. Whoever described Wideacre as 18th century VC Andrews was DEAD ON. It even has the cheesy sequels that follow the daughter and HER own special brand of incestual woe.

I like her books because they're amazingly well-written romance novels. Trashy romance novels are guilty pleasures, well-written romance novels are WONDERFUL.
