It's been years since I read those books. Refresh my memory- Who was she, and what did she do wrong? (I'm not even sure if I got up to the book she was in)

Fiona was in the Grim Grotto. Haven't read in a while either, but IIRC Count Olaf & crew took her and the Baudelaires as hostage on the submarine they were on and Fiona joined Count Olaf because her lost brother was with him.

I agree. At first when I read it I was mad, but it was still pretty clear that it was a hard choice for her to make. She was fond of Klaus, of course, but her brother - whom for years she had believed lost to her - turns up right in front of her, and her only other family member had just, ahem, 'disappeared'. I mean, who was she supposed to go with?

Aw hell yeah. I agree with this.
Except that I wish she could have chosen both — that Fernald, Fiona and the Baudelaires had managed to get off the submarine unnoticed and drifted away into safety like the fked up family they'd be. Fiona/Klaus would inevitably happen.
And then eventually so would Violet/Fernald (hey, it was Widdershins's idea!).

Oh god, remembering Fiona (and ASOUE in general) breaks my heart a little bit.
The last thing she said to Klaus made me feel awful for her situation.
