You could just think of what an edgy ableist asshole she is instead?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-19 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer to think about what sort of knee-jerk judgemental assholes people can be.

Chickenshit anon reply to chickenshit anon fancock is chickenshit; my tautology is eternal and your argument is invalid.

Hey, here's some more edgy trigger language: She is not your bitch.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-19 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
A+

I'll even sign mine....

[identity profile] gershwhen.livejournal.com 2010-02-20 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
She is not your bitch.

You know, that's pretty much her problem right there. She never has a genuine new idea. Even your quote is taken from her partner -- who at least has talent.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoy your privilege!

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Here, feel bad for being a person."

idgi. Also, I'm noting plenty of support for Palmer from people who are genuinely disabled. What I LOVE are the people who crawl out of the woodwork for this for some new 'cause,' all ready to white knight for something and be total assholes because they feel shitting all over people is right and just and holy.

Go. Fuck. Yourself.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, it's easy to make accusations of privilege when you're commenting to an anon; some of us are disabled and resentful of the requirement to disclose all our problems so we can have our tickets to comment on something validated.

What's being privileged here, by misuse of the "tone" argument and the power of the mob, is unadulterated meanness and lack of empathy.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-19 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
it's perfectly possible to recognize the ableism in evelyn evelyn, think amanda's reaction totally sucked, and still love her, or her work. this secret in particular seems to be more about the music and what it means to OP and hir friend then about amanda palmer.

i can relate OP, i've bonded over music with a friend of mine, but she's changed so much since then it makes me feel like all of it was meaningless, so now i have a hard time connecting to the songs and bands we used to love. :\

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I really hated her "apology", but I wouldn't say I've stopped being a fan (yet). I'll check out Evelyn Evelyn when it's released but I doubt I'll buy it.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-02-20 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I hate Amanda Palmer... but I hadn't heard this. What did she do that was so ableist? I'm trying to Google that song name for a video and coming up skunked.

I always felt kinda weird about her but everyone I know lurves her and it's like you DON'T GET MENTAL ILLNESS OMGZ if you don't adore her, so... I kinda selfishly want to know about it if she did something wrong.

I fail at being nice.

Any questions?

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-02-20 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow.

No.

No questions at all.

I'd Googled a bit and didn't realize they were *pretending* and had wondered what was ableist about signing a band. But pretending? OH GOD NO.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. The icing on the fail!caek was Palmer's Twitter response to the Disabled Feminists article, which was (just in case she decides to retcon her dickishness) this:

"setting aside 846 emails and removing the disabled feminists from her mental periphery, @amandapalmer sat down to plan her next record."

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-02-20 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Empathy fail.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
How come this doesn't show up on every pro-Lady Gaga secret? Just wonderin.

[identity profile] gershwhen.livejournal.com 2010-02-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Lady Gaga is impersonating conjoined twins and not seeing why people might be upset about it?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Lady Gaga has an entire music video where she 'dances' in a wheelchair and on crutches.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, what I meant to say was:

Also, this: http://www.disaboomlive.com/Blogs/tiffiny/archive/2009/11/12/lady-gaga-uses-wheelchair-dancer-at-vma-s-world-left-confused.aspx

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Timing.
2. People were pissed about Lady Gaga's schtick, too.
3. Timing.
4. Lady Gaga isn't as directly engaged with the fans as AFP, so it wasn't as personal.
4. TIMING.
Right now, that mess is recent and vivid in people's minds, and is going to be the first thing a lot of folks think of when Amanda Palmer gets mentioned. If this secret had been posted a week or two earlier or later, it probably wouldn't be garnering this kind of reaction- or at least, not to this degree.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Also! No one would know who the actual fuck Amanda Palmer is, if it weren't for her relationship with Neil Gaiman. I certainly never did, and from what I've seen of her over the past couple years, I'm beginning to regret finding out.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's nice to see somebody admit they wouldn't give a shit about this if she wasn't screwing him.

reading comprehension, you can has it

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You do know how to spell assume, right? I'm the anon who linked to the disabled feminists blog, above, so YEAH I would still give a shit about this, and would still think Palmer and her partner (Wembley? Webley? w/e the fuck) are total fuckwads for their startling disability!fail and lack of empathy, and/or hipster response to reasonable critical perspectives on why IT KIND OF SUCKS THAT THEY DID THIS.

I just wouldn't have any idea who the actual fuck these two dipshits ARE, if it weren't for the continual wank, drama, and publicity, surrounding her attachment to Neil Gaiman, who I've been reading for longer than you've probably been alive. (OK OK that's an assumption too, but given the demographic of this place, not far off.)

Unfortunately, the drama, the wank, and the absolute mis-steps of all involved in the various explosions that have occurred, since the AP/NG thing hit the Net, is starting to interfere with my enjoyment of his writing. And that's just not fucking fair at all.

(Anon is pretty much in Burgess Meredith's place right now, from the Twilight Zone episode, "Time Enough at Last".)

Re: reading comprehension, you can has it

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
How about stepping back and giving people the respect you demand for yourself?

The attacks on AP are very much of the sort that philistines of all sorts have used against artists of any variety since time immemorial. Exculding all protected classes from symbolic use is going to shut down human expression faster than you could imagine. Disabled Feminists sounds all righteous, but then so does Focus on the Family; in this case they're pretty much equivalent.

Re: reading comprehension, you can has it

(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Riiiiiight, because some bat-shit Bible-beater shooting an abortion doctor in his church is just so, so, SO comparable, to two second-rate wannabe goth-punkers dressing up in Crip!Drag and NOT GETTING IT when people point out that, yeeeeeeeeeah, no, there might be a problem with that.....

Uh, no. As whackjob as I think FWD can sometimes sound, there is no reality in which that comparison is remotely appropriate...or even fucking makes sense.

Try again.
