Well, the thing is, I know Harmonians don't believe this and shit? But there was never, ever, ever any indication in the book that Harry and Hermione were EVER going to be anything other than best friends. Any person who has ever read a book or seen a movie should have been able to pick up from THE FIRST BOOK that all of Ron and Hermiones *totes subtle* bickering was really them bantering and starting to fall in love. (it's called convention of the genre, check out, uh, every romantic comedy ever made, maybe starting with Beatrice and Benedict?) MUCH LESS that it got more and more explicit in EVERY BOOK. I mean, go on and 'ship whatever ya want, Harmonians, but come the fuck on, that was never, ever canon.

MEANWHILE ... Gale represents Katnip, the girl Katniss was before the Games, the person she can never go back to being. In other words, he represents childhood. Peeta represents Katniss the warrior, the girl she is during and after the games, the person she is becoming. In other words, he represents adulthood. We all get nostalgic for childhood and if, in our world, adulthood was marked with such a LITERAL bloodbath, we'd fear it even more. But, in the end. Katniss can never go back to being Katnip and Peeta is the man that has seen the woman she will be, who has never turned away from her, who wanted to give her the chance to go back to Gale (if that's what she wanted) when Gale stomped off petulantly at the thought she might be with Peeta (even if that was what she wanted.)

THIS IS ALL TEXTUAL AND VERY CLEAR, and Collins has done a *masterful* job laying it all out. It's no coincidence the second book ends with the script flipped and Katniss having to save Peeta. Which she will, make no fucking doubt, and they'll live happily ever after.

Maybe with a son named Hugo.
