I agree with you, anon. The only reason we have to make comments like "I want to enjoy this movie without feeling guilty" is because whiners like OP MAKE us feel guilty. If they want to call us morally corrupt, thats up to them. But it's equally as corrupt and rude continually bring it up and make us feel bad if all we want to do is go see a goddamn movie.

In B4 ALL of the arguments we've heard a thousand times that put us down for wanting to go see a movie.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why I can't take your little victim act seriously. Did the OP say anything about you being morally corrupt? Was there anything about how you should feel guilty for wanting to see it? Stop projecting and listen to what s/he's actually saying before you get all upset.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
The OP did imply it's horrible and wrong for someone to just want to see the movie. With an added "SHUT UP NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOU BUT YOU HAVE TO CARE ABOUT MEEEEE"

Which is quite typical of these arguments

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. Where? What words, specifically, read as a condemnation of everyone who wants to see the movie?

With an added "SHUT UP NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOU BUT YOU HAVE TO CARE ABOUT MEEEEE"

The OP is not obligated to care about whether or not your squee was stomped. I would say that any socially aware person should be concerned with the representation of PoC in the media.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Reread the secret. OP talks about comments that say "Fuck the haters, I'm going to enjoy the movie" very negatively. Implying if you want to see the movie, you should be ashamed of that desire.

The OP is not obligated to care about whether or not your squee was stomped. I would say that any socially aware person should be concerned with the representation of PoC in the media.

OP shouldn't care about anyone or anything but themselves and their feelings. Wouldn't it be a great world if everyone thought like that!

Reread the secret. OP talks about comments that say "Fuck the haters, I'm going to enjoy the movie" very negatively. Implying if you want to see the movie, you should be ashamed of that desire.

Really? It sounds like the OP's more upset over the 'fuck you' than the 'I'm going to enjoy the movie.'

OP shouldn't care about anyone or anything but themselves and their feelings.

Are you still trying to summarize the OP, or is that what you personally believe?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm summarizing what you just said.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
You must not have read my comment, since what I said was The OP is not obligated to care about whether or not your squee was stomped. I would say that any socially aware person should be concerned with the representation of PoC in the media. That's pretty much the opposite of OP shouldn't care about anyone or anything but themselves and their feelings

[identity profile] first-quadrant.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, I'm pretty sure OP was just mad at the offensiveness of the comments, and IA.

I have actually had to post once...

"Guys, if you really want to see the movie, please post: I'm excited to see this movie! instead of FUCK ALL Y'ALL I WANNA SEE THIS MOVIE."

Do you see the difference?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Are you fucking serious. I'm on the wtf-is-this-BS side of the movie argument, but don't even try to act like our side doesn't shove guilt down the throats of those who don't agree.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for 'our side' whoever the fuck you are, but that's not what I'm trying to do.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Cool.

Then these criticisms are probably not directed at you. You don't need to take everything personally.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah, you HAVE to make obnoxious, whiny comments about not wanting to feel guilty! Other people are totally MAKING you feel guilty!

Oh my fucking god, what a victim complex you have.

For the record, there is no fucking reason on earth why you should feel guilty for wanting to watch a movie, or for enjoying it, if what you're enjoying about it doesn't depend entirely on its flaws. Unless you're planning to go see it and enjoy it because hey, thank GOD Asians aren't playing the main characters!, there's no reason you should feel guilty.

But hey, rather than take up the challenge of seeing both the movie's strengths and its flaws, and being willing to speak to the erasure of Asians from it...you'd rather feel personally wounded! Rather than see WHY someone might be upset enough to say that others who'd enjoy it are "morally corrupt," you'd rather be upset that someone is trying to spoil your mindless fun!

(Yours. Yours personally. They aren't speaking out because of the way it affects them personally. Naw, they just want to harsh your buzz. YOURS. YOURS PERSONALLY.)

Now, why can't all the people who are upset that, once again, they will not be represented in a mainstream film see HOW MUCH THEY HURT YOU?! You should LET THEM KNOW every chance you get, so they will be sure to keep their silence so your feelings won't be hurt.

BAW.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
The first part of your comment makes complete sense, but you ruin it by going in and telling them that they should feel bad about feeling bad, and they're just selfish losers for not getting it.

Having fun getting kicks out of making others feel miserable for not being as enlightened as you are.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
WTF are you EVEN smoking? If ALL you got from this was me saying, "You shouldn't feel guilty about liking the movie," and you consider it "ruined" by the rest, well, fail.

The entire comment was about how inappropriate it is for them to 1) feel victimized by people upset over Avatar, and 2) suggest other people should not be voicing the criticisms they are because it hurts their feelings!

But hey, thanks for compartmentalizing each paragraph so you could take whatever you already wanted to from it.

Enlightened. Please. I am not so enlightened, but this is common fucking sense: no fan is victimized by critique of a movie, and positioning yourself like you are is a ridiculous and privileged move.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's not inappropriate for people to wish others would stop attacking them or trying to make them feel bad. It's incorrect for them to assume that everyone voicing criticisms of Avatar are attacking them or trying to make them feel bad.

Not everyone making criticisms of Avatar casting leaves it at just that. There are people in this very thread arguing that people should feel guilty and upset for wanting to see the movie.

Bullying is not restricted to victimizing minorities, btw

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
My problem here is that I have yet to honestly see an example of someone being "attacked" for wanting to see the movie which was, in fact, an attack for wanting to see the movie. Maybe I missed it, though.

Criticized for wanting to see the movie (for unstated reasons)? Sure, and I think that's fair. Attacked because they openly stated they don't give a damn if it's racist? Probably, and I wouldn't care if they were.

Attacked for wanting to see the movie, with no stated or implied thoughts on the casting? Doubt it. I'm guessing that's mostly white people taking any implied criticism as a threat. "You should feel guilty for wanting to see this movie," yeah, I'm just not seeing a personal attack here.

[identity profile] wise-one-in-hel.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
On the other hand everytime I've commented anyplace on the web that I disaprove of the casting because of the whole race thing I've been "attacked".

I have no problem with agreeing to disagree, but EVERYTIME I've said anything about this on the web, someone took it apon themselves to jump down my throat. BOTH SIDES have more than thier share of "haters".
