So all gift fic is exempt from concrit?

By the person who the gift is for, yes.

Edit: I might see it differently because I've done holiday gift exchanges (like [livejournal.com profile] yuletide and I would never consider concritting my gift fics, even if I didn't like them)

So basically, just because it's for you, it could be the worst fucking fic EVER and you'd still smile and tell them you like it?
Wow. Personally, I'd prefer if people were honest with me.

[personal profile] fangirlism 2010-02-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I would. I would find the one thing I liked about it and focus on it. Because it was gift for me, and the author - even if they aren't very good - did take the time and effort to create something just for me.

[identity profile] aurrai.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey [livejournal.com profile] feywood.
SHUT UP FUCK UP.
(because I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] linear_flower is too nice to say it.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The difference here is that people are actually giving that fic to you. It's like you received something on christmas, and would go all ":| Well the intention was nice and I like how you thought about it but the colour is bad because so and so..."

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, so I was raised to be polite, but honest. If you get a gift, you expect the person to know you well enough to pick the right thing. If you place a request, you expect them to fulfill it and not write you drivel. If they do, you do have a right to tell them. You don't HAVE to shut up just because it's 'polite'.

No one's honest anymore.

Reread:
"If you get a gift, you expect the person to know you well enough to pick the right thing. If you place a request, you expect them to fulfill it"

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What if they fulfill the request but in a way you don't like?

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you should have requested more specifically.

When I write a request, I write the request. Yes, I'll do it in my own style, that's unavoidable, but I don't start throwing extra stuff in. Then you're not writing the request anymore and you do indeed have the risk of not knowing whether they like a kink. So don't do it!

But that wasn't even the point of the discussion. It's about saying thank you and lying when you get crap. Not about how to fill requests.
Nice job derailing.

I don't expect people to give me THE PERFECT THOUGHT-OUT GIFT because I'd be expecting too much. IMO what matters is that they actually took the time to give you the gift/write you a fill, and if you don't like it, well tough luck for both you and the filler/person who gave the gift.

Honesty=/= being blunt btw

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I never advocated being blunt! I might be a blunt person, but I never said anyone else should do the same. I'm simply in favour of being honest if you don't like it.

Ah, if they're going to take the time, they might as well do it right. Else, what's the bother?

confusing tl;dr is a go!

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on what you consider "doing it right" and what they consider "doing it right" as well.
If you manage to crit the fill in a nice way and concentrating more on ways the person who wrote it can improve, it can be almost like a gift exchange because you're giving tips to the person in a way and I'm okay with it. It's just...if I were in the person's shoes I'd feel weird at having the requester crit'ing something I spent some of my free time writing hoping that it would please them :( (though if you fill something, it's obvious that you're enjoying it as well because you selected the request OH GOD I'M LOOKING TOO DEEP INTO THIS. People bother with this because they're having fun doing it, and they might think they're doing it right while you don't)

I understand your point of view, but IMO there's nothing wrong with being polite and just taking what the person gives you without adding much to it, even if the fill really isn't in your preferences.

I already tried that analogy, didn't work.

It's okay, you explained it better than I did. ^_^

[identity profile] miss_prince.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say it depends on how it's presented. TO CONTINUE THE GIFT ANALOGY:

Case 1: The fic doesn't appeal to you, but it's clear the author tried to make something you'd like. It's like getting a lumpy hand-knitted sweater -- you may not like it, you'll probably never wear it, but they put a lot of effort into it for you, so it's probably best to just say thank you and that you, uh, like the color. No need to lie and say "omg I will wear this every day it's perfect!" but acknowledgment that they tried and you appreciate that.

Case 2: The author was totally half-assing it (probably more common in exchanges than kink memes, I guess). It's like someone getting you a five dollar McDonald's gift certificate when you don't even eat at McDonald's. In this case, I don't see why anyone needs to pretend they like a story like that, and the author doesn't deserve to get away with it.

Just how I see it.

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
And I still vote for concrit in both situations. They tried! That's great! Concrit is, usually, both positive and negative, so I don't see why they shouldn't get some. I never said that anyone should say "oh wow this is awful why did you even bother typing it?"

[identity profile] miss_prince.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
While I am typically for concrit in like 99.9% of all situations, I draw the line at gift fic written for me, where the author put in honest effort. I don't think the fic itself is above concrit; I just believe I, as the recipient, shouldn't be the one to give it.

We'll have to agree to disagree.
