At this point, I tend to roll my eyes at anyone who says that someone 'jumped down their throat,' or 'attacked them' during a discussion of racism. There are times when this is actually true, but so many people can't tell the difference between criticism/a dissenting opinions and an attack. If you said, "I want to see the movie," and they responded by telling you about the potentially problematic aspects, you were not attacked. Now, if they called you names, or insulted your mother, then you'd have something to complain about. But, sorry, no sympathy if you can't handle a difference of opinion.

You can call me a liar if you want (since I can't actually prove it to you because I didn't get it on video and you weren't there) but during a conversation about upcoming movies, all I said was "You know what I'm actually looking forward to? The Airbender movie." And someone who I wasn't even talking to (group of people chatting on the other side of the table) came back at me, "Oh my God, you're actually looking forward to that racist pile of drivel?" Then they proceeded to give me their prepared speech about why TLA is racist.

As you can see, I said absolutely nothing about race, so everything you said is invalid. All I said was that I wanted to see it. And it's not really a difference in opinion if all I said was I wanted to see it and they started to attack me.

... and? If you didn't want to be part of that discussion, you could've walked away. And now you know that the two of you disagree, so hopefully you'll know to avoid the issue. Unless, of course, you want to discuss it, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I also don't see any attacks. At least, not against you, since calling the movie 'drivel' does qualify as an attack. People expressed an opinion that you didn't like. Get over it.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's like you're not even reading what I write.

I'm not gonna bother any more. Have fun feeling right, and doing EXACTLY what I was talking about.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I read what you wrote. You described an incident where you said you wanted to see Avatar and someone told you why they thought you shouldn't. The only potentially rude part of that whole debacle was that you were having the conversation with someone else -- and even that varies depending on the situation.

It's not something I would personally do, since I'm painfully shy, but I wouldn't call it a personal attack.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh my God, you're actually looking forward to that racist pile of drivel?"

How the fuck is that not an attack.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It is an attack on the movie. However, it is not an attack on that particular person. Which is exactly what I said in my comment.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... I don't know how you're not seeing that as an attack on the person. I really, really don't.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
And I don't see why you are seeing it that way. Depending on the tone of voice used, it could be condescending, but they're still describing the movie, not the person they're talking to.

I would like to make it clear that I don't think that's the right way to go about it and don't think it's okay to butt in on other people's conversastions. But I don't think that it was a cruel, personal attack.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I could see it not being an attack if they just butted in and said "Ugh, that movie is a racist pile of drivel." I would still find it obnoxious, but not a personal attack.

But since they specifically said you, yeah, I don't know how you can defend that as not being a personal attack.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
But since they specifically said you, yeah, I don't know how you can defend that as not being a personal attack.

I'm starting to worry that maybe I did misread it, because the only use of the term 'you' I can find is the "you're looking forward to the racist pile of drivel."

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I can't believe you want to go to this dance, it's going to be so horrible.

Would you consider that a personal attack or not?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
No, and I still don't understand why you think it is.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
That was a bad example.

How about, "I can't believe you like that ugly dress,"

It's a direct attack on the person that does like it.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree here. I must be some sort of robot, because none of these things would hurt my feelings. They might embarrass me a little, but I wouldn't feel wounded.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
You wouldn't feel upset or attacked if someone implied you're a gross, bad person for liking or looking forward to something? ... huh.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
No, because I don't think "I think X is disgusting" means "I think you are a disgusting person for liking it."

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
...

Uh...

"Ew, you like that" definitely implies that 'you' is gross for liking it. I... I really don't understand how you can't see that.

*playing the smallest fucking violin in the world for you*

Oh my god, they criticized your taste in movies! It's almost like they mugged you in an alleyway.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, thanks for being part of the problem.

Protip: telling people their feelings and experiences don't matter really doesn't help your argument or make anyone inclined to listen to you.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
No. The PROBLEM (like there's one? let's pretend there's one for a moment) is people going around thinking that criticism is the same thing as a personal attack.

There are dozens of other arenas in life where it's important - critical, in fact - to learn that lesson, but when it comes to oppression in particular...people need to get over themselves.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I could have sworn we were discussing the problem of racism and apathy toward its presence in our culture. Maybe I'm wrong.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I was being a bit facetious, admittedly. But...you could look at racism as a single problem, or you could see it as a huge, related complex of problems. In the latter context, talking about THE presumed cause or continuation of "the problem" often sounds rather silly. Hence that rather off-the-cuff remark.

But that part, yeah, it was not so srs bzns.

Don't people talk like that about movies all the time? I'm sure people get similar speeches about why somebody shouldn't see Star Wars prequels as well.

I mean, I'm not denying that the person was obnoxious if they were since I wasn't there, but if somebody casually told me they were looking forward to TLA I might feel like I should say something about the racebending too. Hopefully not to be a jerk about it, but it's a sucky thing about the movie. People say stuff like that all the time about movies, even if it's just "You should see the original" if it's a remake or whatever.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, yeah? I agree?

*slightly confused as to whether you're arguing with him or not*
