Really? What I've seen on FS is in response to people actively denying that its racist, or claiming that it doesn't matter. I don't mind if people like something problematic, since I like quite a lot of shady stuff. But I am uncomfortable when someone says that their desire to enjoy a movie matters more than my right to see people of my own race portrayed in the media.

Let me put it more simply: there are people who have been assholes about this. But the vast majority of people involved are not going after random, clueless fans.

Oh, and I do have a bias here, in that I'm more sympathetic to people who get angry over actual injustices, then fans who throw tantrums because someone criticized a movie they want to see.

Except that a lot of people don't seem to know the difference. Did you see one of the other anons earlier in the thread, who claimed that the OP was calling them 'morally corrupt' or something? Or the one I just commented to, who felt that the person who tried to explain why s/he felt Avatar was racist was attacking her? For every person who is legitimately mistreated, there's two who are overreacting.

You know what the real problem is?

Both sides of this argument refuse to admit that there are times when they might be overreacting. Sometimes people are being deliberately obtuse, ignorant assholes. Sometimes people operate on a hair-trigger impulse and overreact in their criticism or attacks. Neither side is always right about what they say or do.
