(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:09 am (UTC)(link)I see what you're saying here, I really do. But the problem is that the Olympics is not based on poverty, while the casting of non-Asian actors is integral to the movie. So it will be relevant, if only tangentially, any time the movie is brought up.
If you really want to completely escape these discussions, then I'd suggest creating a community where criticism of the movie is not allowed. Because otherwise you're asking people to censor themselves when they might be legitimately hurt, all for the sake of your squee.

I don't know if you realize this or not, but what you're doing right now is asking that people censor themselves or remove themselves from your presence instead of expressing their own thoughts or feelings about a matter.

How, exactly, am I doing that? As far as I'm concerned, you can express positive opinions of the movie all you want, as long as you understand that people may disagree with you.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 05:55 am (UTC)(link)Right, but I think what people are arguing with you about is the fact that you seem to associate the opinion that expressing positive opinions of the movie is the same as saying that you think racism is okay. If this isn't the case, please make your opinion explicit.
Also I don't think creating a safe haven/community for such people with positive opinions on the movie is the main issue. Some people just want to say 'Hey, I'm looking forward to the movie' without having others attack them by saying 'YOU'RE RACIST!' News flash: these same people who want to watch the movie may very well be aware of the whitewashing, but they are still looking forward to watching it since Avatar is not the 'be all, end all' of racism in Hollywood movies.
