(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 01:19 am (UTC)(link)Just for the record, no, I do not think that.
I'm sorry if I have offended you in these comments, but in my humble opinion, raising the awareness of racism in Hollywood is far more important than boycotting any single film.
I think it's interesting that you say that raising awareness is more important than boycotting one particular movie as if a) boycotting isn't frequently used to raise awareness and b) the people boycotting aren't involved in any kind of activism.

as if a) boycotting isn't frequently used to raise awareness and b) the people boycotting aren't involved in any kind of activism.
Boycotting can be used to raise awareness, but I don't think boycotting is what usually convinces the average joe to join the movement. That's done much more through discussion. The people boycotting are going to tend to be the more dedicated proponents of anything, just because they are the ones who will sacrifice more for it. However, the people at either end aren't usually the ones that have the most effect - it's the people in the middle who will. While I don't know what I'm going to do about Avatar (I'm waiting for reviews to see if it's made up for its flaws), I can say that whether I boycott this movie or not, I'm much more likely to take a second look at white washing in the future.
A single boycott won't accomplish nearly as much as a gradual shift. Instead of guilting people over seeing one movie, it's much more effective to ask them to consider the racial implications of casting in the future. As I said, Joe and Jane Doe might not be willing to boycott Avatar, but if the people who are active (through boycotting or otherwise) have had an effect, they still might decide not to see a similar movie.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 03:23 am (UTC)(link)Not quite. It's more like, "It's dismissive and disrespectful to say that your desire to squee matters more than people's desire to express their outrage, disappointment or frustration over the representation of Asians in the mainstream media."
Does that make more sense?
It's interesting that you differentiate between the people that are boycotting and those who are trying to raise awareness of whitewashing. From what I've seen, the same group is doing both. Maybe there's a large group of people who are seeing the movie while being involved in anti-racist activism, but I certainly haven't seen it.

After the trailer you saw no one who was talking about white washing starting to reconsider seeing it? What I'm saying is that there are people who raise awareness, but don't boycott as well as people who do both.
