And like I said: even if they are only doing it to be "cool" and "edgy" (which I question), does that make what they're saying any less true?

It doesn't, but it cheapens the argument.

If people are feeling guilty, perhaps it's the cognitive dissonance they feel about supporting or defending a film that they know embodies racism and prejudice that's still a part of their culture.


Do you feel guilty when you buy coffee? Do you think people should feel guilty about drinking coffee, because of the cognitive dissonance of supporting an unfair trade?

Should people feel guilty about being able to eat whatever they want when so many people in the world are starving? Should people feel guilty about being happy because they know many others aren't? Should people feel guilty about loving someone they know holds bigoted views? Should people feel guilty about not always being angry about all the injustice in the world?

Again, assumptions. And even if I did drink coffee (which I don't): fair trade coffee is available.

There's a big difference between actively supporting something that's deeply prejudiced and not being able to feed all the starving peoples of the world. No one can't be responsible for anyone's happiness, and no one can force anyone to change their bigoted views. We can do our best not to support them, and to speak out against injustice.

And of course, there are a million things in the world for people to feel guilty about. I've done things I felt guilty about, and that went against my principles. But here's where the choice comes: when someone else points out that you're doing or supporting something that's wrong, do you deny it and get mad at them for making you "feel bad?" Or do you take responsibility for your words and actions?

Nowhere am I dismissing the truth they're speaking. I am raising my eyebrows at the people that get on their moral high horses and feel good about themselves for being assholes about ideals they don't even really believe in.

And hey, look at you, typing on a computer. You're actively supporting injustice. Every woman that takes her husband's last name is actively supporting sexism, even if she acknowledges that she's only doing so because of societal pressure.

People like you, that sit on top of the world and judge others for not making the same choices they do, really, really bother me. People are allowed to feel hurt by your arrogant condescension. People are allowed to feel hurt by your judgemental comments. They have no obligation to just accept what you say as the absolute truth and agree that they are terrible, terrible people.

Nope. Nowhere did I tell you, or anyone else, to feel horrible. I said that if you felt horrible when people pointed out the racism evident in this movie, perhaps it's not because those people are forcing you to feel something. Perhaps it's because what they're saying is true.

And if you don't feel horrible? As I said, no one can make you feel or do anything you don't want to. Since you don't dismiss the truth in what these people are saying... what other reason would you have to feel bad about it? Just the fact that someone on the internet is actively disagreeing with you?

That said, I'm glad you don't dismiss the truth in what they're saying. But in the original anon post I was responding to, the poster said, "I just see a lot of wank-happy fans playing the racecard because they didn't like the idea of a live action film." If you are the same anon, then your statement seems to have changed. If you're not, then rest assured I was not talking to you.

I'm not the original anon, but I'm tired of those wankhappy fans cheapening a valid argument, too.

I appear to have misread you about some things, but in any case, people's emotions and reactions are not always rational or logical. People can feel bad about not noticing something or about enjoying something, regardless of whether or not someone's telling them they should.

And no, I don't know who Melinda gates is.

Honestly, I don't aim to make anyone feel bad. And I really hope no one dismisses valid arguments just because some people are jumping in for the drama.

I'm not the author of the original secret, but even there, he or she said they could understand people wanting to see it. As I read it, the OP was mostly disagreeing with people that dismiss claims of racism and insult the people that brought them up just because they'd prefer not to think about it.

My intention is not to make anyone feel guilty about liking or being excited about the movie. Ideally, in speaking about it, I would hope that people were willing to genuinely consider the arguments, and if they weren't already, become more aware of how much white privilege is still present in our society.

(I meant Bill Gates' wife. I'm just confused as to how typing on a computer lead to supporting injustice lead to the issue of women being expected to take their husband's name when they married.)

You're right, I was saying that I'm sure many of the books or movies I've watched do, in fact, have unfortunate undertones.

How many have I watched that don't? I'm someone we could pull something unfortunate, however small, out of most titles. And much of they time they'd be right.
