Really, you'd try to improve her sewing, right there? Right after she hands you the gift? You wouldn't wait a short amount of time, maybe a week or two? You'd do it right there when she hands you the sweater, "nice, but oh here, here and here, it's a little lumpy!" you'd say that while looking her in the eye, after she spent maybe months of effort on that sweater, sewing it for you. You'd say right there, while holding your new sweater, that she needs to improve her sewing (so much so that you're compelled to say something!) and, hey, you'd be more than happy to help her with that!!!

It doesn't matter how you say it, in that moment, that receiving-a-gift moment, responding with anything but gratitude is rude.

You could wait with a sweater, you could bring it up later, "hey I noticed this and this, maybe I could show you some pointers!" but that doesn't work in fandom, generally, unless you know the person. You generally have one moment to respond to a giftfic, a comment box. Using that comment box for concrit, for a giftfic, is rude. It just is. It really, really is. We have literally thousands of other occasions for responding with concrit, a giftfic just isn't one of them, at least not for the recipient.
