THIS.

I almost want to ship it just to call it Perbert now. Sounds like the lost child of the Addams family.

[identity profile] supercrook.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, anon. SO FREAKING HARD.
Seriously, we need to get some Hip Perbert written up in here.

"19th century boys who are best friends" is one of my favorite pairing types. Anyway, you can't hope to be crazier than this fellow who wrote an essay about how Great Expections is all about masturbation, apparently because hands are described a lot.

Well, there is a Dickens character out there, I'm not sure which book, called Master Bates, so clearly Dickens had a dirty mind at times...;)

OH GOD. DICKENS SECRET.

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
You could always use Pip's full name and call the ship Philbert...

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
*snerk*

I'd read that!

[identity profile] aeonamber.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Great Expectations secret ♥ Also, completely agree with you. Lol, Perbert.

[identity profile] accented.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I am so glad I'm not alone in this belief.

So am I! ♥

Hmm, I don't think I paid close enough attention when reading this, so it could be a possibility. But the ending stayed with me, and I can't help but earnestly hope that things would work out between Pip and Estella. I felt that Estella was a very broken woman and needed the love that Pip could offer her in order to heal.

Nonetheless, if I ever give this a second read, I'll look out for the homoeroticism.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome.

Also, slash is not disrespect!

Evidence straight from Dickens! (aka excerpt)

[identity profile] guildnstern.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
YES! My friends and I decided they were meant to be after reading it in ninth grade English. The moment that convinced us:

"Herbert," said I, after a short silence, in a hurried way, "can you see me best by the light of the window, or the light of the fire?"

"By the firelight," answered Herbert, coming close again.

"Look at me."

"I do look at you, my dear boy."

"Touch me."

"I do touch you, my dear boy."

"You are not afraid that I am in any fever, or that my head is much disordered by the accident of last night?"

"N-no, my dear boy," said Herbert, after taking time to examine me. "You are rather excited, but you are quite yourself."

[identity profile] nevacaruso.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember that scene! It convinced me, too.

[identity profile] signifiers.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
YES. I spent the entirety of my reading it at age fifteen half in love with Herbert himself and half with the idea of them as a couple. TOO ADORABLE.

[identity profile] navyclementine.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I MEAN DUH. I actually don't ship them, although I definitely see it...I just can't imagine Pip in a relationship of any sort. BUT THE HOMOEROTICISM DEFINITELY EXISTS.

Now, while we're on the topic of literature slash, anyone for The Chosen...?

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
DANNY/REUVEN, FUCK YEAH

[identity profile] navyclementine.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Our school's GSA had a meeting about slash (which I didn't go to -- partially because I wasn't in school, partially because it would've been awkward) and one of the posters was about Danny and Reuven, because we all read The Chosen in ninth grade, and we ALL ship them. Even the ones who don't know what they're doing. I was considering writing an essay on their love, and my English teacher said he would've let me, but he thought that it would devalue the book for my classmates... :/

IN SUMMARY: THEY ARE SO IN LOVE IT KIND OF HURTS.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-26 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
When my class were reading this last year, I kinda introduced my grade to the concept of shipping by dramatically proclaiming my love for Perbert (my friends and I thought we were hilarious for coming up with a portmanteau that sounded like 'pervert'. We even had a song and everything, oh man)
My mind is blooown that we're not alone in these sentiments.

[identity profile] nevacaruso.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This is an awesome secret. I was an English major who also took a class in Dickens' works, and I definitely caught the Pip/Herbert subtext (while simultaneously loving the relationship between Pip and Estella).

Also, if anyone's read David/Copperfield, I totally read David as having an ill-advised crush on Steerforth.
