I wouldn't say it made me cry but it made me feel a bit...shit. For reasons I can't quite explain.

I know it's South Park and I expect that show to be a bit weird but this was the first episode of it that I'd see in years so it was a bit of a mind fuck. I spent most of it thinking WTF am I watching? More so than what I remember is normal for watching South Park!

It made me really sad and disturbed too. What's worse is seeing episode reviews which said things to the effect of "Haha, yeah, this episode was really funny, because it shows how Britney really is so stupid/ugly/fat/worthless!" when I felt that the pov was overwhelmingly in support of Britney (as a person) and against the unfair media attention and vilification she (and other celebrities) gets. It makes a genuinely chilling point about how much we haven't changed all that much as a society from the days of human sacrifice for ritual and suffering as entertainment, even though we like to pretend we're better than that. And how we're all complicit in the torment of celebrities during their most vulnerable times, by continuing to silently consume stories of their most personal issues.


The analogies to "The Lottery" were also spot-on.

To make some really interesting, sometimes eerily accurate, sometimes just plain disturbing points and delve into truly fucked-up stuff. Because it's animated, they can without everyone shitting (as many) bricks.

This shit is definitely worth having an extreme reaction to, at least as much as most media.

I tend to waver in my agreement with their viewpoints, but I was really with them on this one. We cannibalize celebrities sometimes, especially the women. It's depressing.

I think it was one of those South Park episodes that were fairly sincere in its disgust, and was probably one of the darker episodes that wasn't trying for the funny side of satire, but more of the biting kind.
