For me this 'ship works in fanon just because Leonard/Penny are so god-awful in canon.

Aww, I like Leonard/Penny ;) But I'm not in the fandom so really have no idea what goes on in it. I just watch the show and in canon I just don't really see Sheldon as anything other than wonderfully asexual and socially retarded, which I love. I can see though where people would want to ship them in fanon, their whole dynamic would make for some hilarious fic.

I truly believe how you feel about Leonard and Penny is true of the general casual viewering audience (ie people outside the fandom). They're very happy to watch the show as it's being played out, they're not super invested in these kinds of things.

Leonard and Penny aren't my favorite characters on the show and I think they're relationship has definitely started out bumpy, but it's grown on me. I totally respect that not everyone likes them (I didn't at first either), but it upsets me when people say how "awful" they are as if that's a statement of fact for everyone who watches instead of a personal opinion.

It really does seem to be the case. And what you said about just being happy to watch it play out without any real investment is exactly how I feel.

I mean I'm in fandoms that are passionate about their OTPs and 'ships and all that so I can see where people can get into a twist over their favorites, but yeah, same here - I really hate it when people insist a certain character or ship is bad just because it's not their personal favorite. I've had my fair share of dealing with that kind of behavior and it tends to get tedious.
