The best thing about comics is that you can start them at any time, and give or take a couple months, be right up to speed with everyone else that's been reading them for years. They're pretty forgiving in that respect.

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The new Invincible Iron Man series is a good place to start (there is an old one, so pay attention when you go to buy). We're only what, 21, 22 issues into it. The writing's pretty decent, the art doesn't make me want to gouge my eyes out. It's the book that broke my ten year comicbook dry spell. :)

Start there or the one after it. If you like those, you can explore backward or pick up the monthly as you want. There are a lot of people who can give you suggestions but ultimately, you'll like what you like and don't let anyone get all up in your face about it.

You haven't missed out on years of awesomeness by not watching superhero movies. Most of them were pretty bad until relatively recently.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
This. The cast and crew for Iron Man actually put in the effort to make it a good one. Most of them are a shameless attempt to cash in a popular character and you can tell the actors aren't even trying. Personally, Daredevil comes to mind. Ben Affleck was barely trying and actually looked out-of-shape and half-hearted in some of the action scenes.

I'm not a comic reader myself, but in terms of movies, it's a very hit or miss selection. So I wouldn't feel too bad. :)

Wikipedia helps if you don't have a PHD in continuity.

You could also lurk Scans_Daily (http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/). They won't laugh at your questions either - everybody starts somewhere. (if you're looking for something in particular, go here (http://scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/tag/) and Ctrl-F)

I've been a casual fan of comic book films, but not a comic book reader, and I kept putting off watching Iron Man until about a month ago. After that, I wondered why I'd left it for so long, because he's amazing. It definitely made me want to go check out some of the books.

Comic fans would never laugh at that! They would love to give you recommendations! Check out an Iron man post on Scans Daily (on Dreamdwidth) or maybe even ask on No_Scans (on livejournal).

Comic fans would never laugh at that! They would love to give you recommendations!

This exactly! As someone else pointed out, everyone's got to start somewhere! :)

The first Iron Man comic I picked up was the Iron Man: Civil War trade paperback, and I was able to follow it just fine.

[identity profile] x-kchan-x.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who's just started into the realm of comics, I would definitely have to agree that scans_daily over at Dreamwidth is a good place to lurk. Haha!

Also, I've been catching up on character history and backstory by reading Wikipedia articles, not gonna lie. It makes the whole thing way less intimidating... and is a good starting place for some basic character/book info. And I'm a nerd that likes reading Wiki entries, so that could just be me! :D

[identity profile] curls.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Wikipedia is extremely helpful. I do a lot of that, too, because comic book universes are so massive. It can be very intimidating to approach.

[identity profile] sharknasty.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Read some comics. Movie wise, you haven't missed much but some So Okay, It's Average films and some So Bad, It's Good ones.

[identity profile] curls.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Go into a comic book shop and ask. Seriously, they're very helpful.

If that's too intimidating, join some Iron Man communities here on LJ and ask. That's what I did and I found some very knowledgeable people who didn't judge. If anything, they were eager to share their love of comic books.

[identity profile] ironjill.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't recommend starting with the latest Invincible Iron Man series solely because it leaves a little bit out in terms of information of how he got where he was when the series starts out. And I dislike Matt Fraction but that's another story.

However! If you are looking for a start, I'd recommend the previous restart that Warren Ellis wrote with Extremis that solidifies some of the history and reboots him from some of his other origin stories to Desert Storm, which is a bit closer to a relevant time frame, since Marvel's timelines are confusing! Anyway, that's where I started, and you would then follow up with Execute Program then Civil War and Director of SHIELD. I'd just note that the comic version of Tony is...quite a bit different than his movie incarnation, but getting started in comics isn't really that difficult once you get going! The Marvel Wiki (http://marvel.wikia.com/Main_Page) is always a good place to troll around on to get a working idea of how things fall into place and who knows who, when they interact, etc.

Read Hyper velocity (http://www.amazon.com/Iron-Man-Hypervelocity-Adam-Warren/dp/0785120831) for it is wonderful and so much fun.

But in general you really can just walk into any comic book shop and ask the guy behind the register for recommendations. IDK if you'll want to pick up the current run on the Invincible Iron Man because it's right in the middle of Stark: Disassembled which is actually really good, but it can be intimidating to start a miniseries in the middle, but in a few more issues it looks like it'll be in a good place.

Other recommendations: Marvel Adventures Iron Man is fantastic (if you can find it in a trade), Marvel Adventures Avengers has some great Iron Man as well and the entire Marvel Adventures line is so much fun, but it isn't in the main continuity but it's a way to get a handle on the characters. Demon in a Bottle is a pretty classic story. I also have to second Scans_Daily, either the closed one on Insane Journal or the active one on Dream Width.

[identity profile] curls.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I love Hypervelocity. That's a great recommendation.

[identity profile] vafaill.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like superhero movies, but Iron Man blew me away :) It's the best superhero movie, next to Batman Begins.

[identity profile] rushhour.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Since I'm a day late to the party I'll just be regurgitating the same info everyone else provided, so just here to say how awesome it is to have new Tony fans. He hasn't been feeling the love since Civil War, and he could really use some.

And I really hope you get into the Avengers, especially with the movie coming out (in 2012, but still). Oooo check out the early ones, and oh Marvel Adventures: Avengers! It's such a spot of happy with Tony and Steve (Captain America) being their BFF-selves. Perfect and consistent characterizations, imo.

[identity profile] iminearhelda.livejournal.com 2010-03-01 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Warren Ellis' run on Iron Man was a influence on the film; and it can be found in most book stores! It is called "Iron Man: Extremist".

[identity profile] http://www.google.com/profiles/stanczyk (from livejournal.com) 2010-03-01 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you want a good start on the full Iron Man I suggest: http://www.amazon.com/Invincible-Iron-Man-Complete-Collection/dp/B000VW2RZ8
The Collection isn't really complete but it is a good place to start. (Yes, I know what's missing because I own some of the missing issues.)

[identity profile] akuma-divine.livejournal.com 2010-03-01 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... oh wow. UM. You want to get into comic books, and I can only assume you're at least in your teens. On the one had, awesome, welcome to possibly the most expensive fandom ever. You will need shelves and filing cabinets and plastic slipcovers, if you want to keep trade paperbacks in good condition.

On the other hand... I honestly don't know where to start. Okay, you seem to be into the superhero angle. Next chance you get, go to a Borders book store and find the comic books section (usually next to magazines or manga). Pick up a trade paperback issue of the following: Sonic, Spiderman, Batman, and Superman. Those are only my recommendations, feel free to get just anything that catches your eye.

GOOD LUCK!!

[identity profile] akuma-divine.livejournal.com 2010-03-01 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
note: this is about comic books in general, not specifically Iron Man, because sadly I don't know as much about that as I probably should.
