I admit, when I first heard him cited as a "British national treasure" my first thought was "why?" He's fine and all, and apparently quite talented on the stage, but he comes off a touch too smarm for my tastes. (How much of that is Captain Jack bleeding into my analysis, I don't know.)

And unrelatedly, it annoys me how the Doctor Who/Torchwood writers give him British dialogue and the occasional British pronunciation to perform with his Chicago accent, and he doesn't correct it. (Yeah, yeah, his character isn't actually from North America, but whatever. With that accent, I don't care if he's from the 50th century, it's ES-tro-gen, not ees-tro-gen.)

It's not nearly as bad as some other actors attempting a British Accent on Doctor Who even, that really obnoxious super genius kid, Rattigan I think in the Sontoran Experiment episodes was horrendous.

American, you mean? I didn't even realize that Rattigan kid was supposed to be American until someone on the interwebs complained about his accent (not to mention--evil, arrogant, immature boy genius is American? That's... original.) American accents on UK TV are typically so universally bad (I'm looking at you, MI-5) that I just try not to pay attention. I hold Barrowman to a higher standard because he lived in America for most of his life and he uses his midwest American accent out-of-character in his everyday life.

I can understand this. Mostly, though, my impression of him is formed by Captain Jack -- a cocksure, arrogant, yet hilarious dude. So, I can't help but want to high-five him for that.

I don't think I've really seen him in anything other than Doctor Who/Torchwood where he sort of plays that kind of character so I wouldn't judge. He seems really nice in interviews and stuff though and he has a pleasant voice so I like him.

Yes. YES. His massive ego pisses me off so much. And most of my flist is utterly in love with him and refuse to believe that I really find him irritating.
