It definitely doesn't to me. It's the sort of colloquial reaction a lot of people have when they don't see something that it seems like everyone else does.

I think there's probably some defensiveness to it, but honestly I don't have a problem with the defensiveness. I think it's unrealistic and unproductive to pretend that being "called out" (as the kids say) on one's privilege doesn't lead to defensive reactions.

Even in people who, in the main, do want to think about their preconceived notions and get rid of them.

I think a lot of people say things that stir up that defensiveness in others and then get mad when that defensiveness results. I don't get that. I mean, sometimes telling someone else an uncomfortable truth is necessary and important. But to then act, when the person totally predictably gets angry, feels hurt, or feels guilty, like the person is insufferable, is... well, it's just pretending people don't have emotions. It's stupid as hell.
