I kinda want to cuddle him. Daleks are just a little too impotent in their unrelenting rage, and so they end up being sort of silly rather than really threatening, like a very angry dachshund or something (which probably has something to do with the fact that I'm watching this at 26 rather 6). That, and something about the toilet plunger arm and bobbling camera eye make them endearing.

I haven't been able to get over this impression of them, despite the body count.

I think the shouting fascist voice is threatening, but the visual cancels out the scary for me. I'd probably find them scary if I'd watched it as a kid (and can see how others could find them a little frightening.)

I've heard (or read about) the accounts of various WHO actors who say the same thing UNTIL the Daleks are actually chasing them down a corridor. Then it's all "AIIIIIIDALEK!!!1"

YES, this. I've often said Daleks could only be scary to a six-year-old.

I think they're adorable and weirdly awesome. Like, yeah, people will die, but it will still be epic! I grin like a maniac when a Dalek appears. Fuck the haters who think they're tired; I will NEVER get sick of Daleks.

Ha, yeah, I can forgive the carnage because inevitably any Dalek enterprise will end in epic failure, and not just any epic failure, but hilariously hyperbolic epic failure in an entertaining way that more than justifies the cost in bodies. You worked up the power and technology to move a couple dozen planets out of their orbits and you still got owned by a single squirrelly man in a pinstripe suit who pilots a flying wooden police box? Yeah, Daleks, that's an embarrassment to screaming space robot fascists everywhere.

I love Daleks. Even when the Dalek episodes are atrociously written the Daleks themselves are still awesomely rageful and awesomely inept. I love it when they toilet-plunger someone's face to death. They should do that more often. I would watch a whacky Doctor Who spinoff with just Daleks. (Like Pinky and the Brain, but with more mass murder.)

I completely agree. For a second when you get the reveal in Journey's End I found them scary, mostly because Sarah Jane is clutching her son and saying "still so young" and that's fucked up. But mostly I cannot for the life of me take them seriously.

This is true of several things from the old series, though -- I appreciate that they kept their heritage, but seriously, K9? Dude is a little metal box. The Cybermen aged pretty well, though.

Wow, I'm late.

I never thought Daleks were scary on TV, I thought they were quite funny (especially the flashy lights either side of their head). This all changed when I went to see the Doctor Who exhibition. They were really imposing, and the minute they started shouting EXTERMINATE and moving (hell yeah I thought it was coming for me) I got why people are terrified.
