I'm with you on this one. Your responses to the comments in this thread confirmed that you meant it the same way I do, too. People treat selfishness as this huge personal offense, and I find it hilarious because most people who cast that word around are, themselves, being selfish. (Using your examples below: you're selfish for watching what you want to watch when you should be watching what THEY want to watch, you're selfish for not spending your money/time on THEM, you're selfish for not giving THEM kids to coo over, etc.)

The whole attitude is ridiculous and I've just given up trying to please those types of people. It's not even worth it because they never appreciate it when you make concessions for them anyway.

the whole purpose of being generous is to never expect anything in return. that's why it's an ideal that people are told to strive for. it rarely works out.

It's one thing to expect gifts/lavish praise/etc. in return. It's quite another, IMO, to expect people to appreciate it when you do something nice for them. Appreciation is really not that hard. A smile. A nod. Saying an occasional "thank you". It's basic manners, at least the way I was raised. I don't think it's too much to ask for. Maybe that's just me?

Not just you. I was raised that way too. It's something that not only shows you appreciate whatever was done, but also that you respect them as a person.

But I also agree with everything you and

aaaaaah have said in this thread, so who knows. Maybe we're the odd ones out. :)

If that's the case, I'd prefer to stay on this side. I'm all for random acts of kindness and stuff like that, but I don't actively do nice things for people who blatantly treat me like crap, you know?
