"Plenty of people who vehemently disagree with one another have very carefully studied one another's position beforehand."

Thank you so much for pointing that out. I get so sick of people suggesting that if I don't agree with their perspective I am ignorant and need to "educate myself". Most people who know me would agree that I'm rather over-educated than under- (working on a second grad degree, realjob!fail), but if I don't agree with random internet PC police I clearly just need someone to tell me I'm ignorant and explain the issue to me as condescendingly as possible. And then I should thank her for it, of course. It's not possible that I (as an educated adult) have a well-articulated, thoughtful position that is simply DIFFERENT.

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick, THIS. THANK YOU.

Thank you for this. Yes. Back when I was less sensible and didn't ignore certain very hardline types of feminist, I'd frequently get told I just didn't understand the concept of patriarchy and needed to go back to "feminism 101," read more Dworkin, read more MacKinnon, learn what people meant when they "called me out" and the like. Thing was, I'd hung out in those communities for years and studied feminist philosophy in graduate school.

The idea that I'd studied theory and community history that they experienced as revelatory, immersed myself in it for a while, and ultimately found it flawed in many ways just didn't seem to even occur to them. If I quoted anything, I was misunderstanding it and needed to read it again. If I didn't quote, I must have been pulling things out of my bum. It was infuriating. Because it wasn't a debate, it was totally rigged, and there was no way not to lose.

I think it's because a lot of this identity politics kind of stuff involves a period where people encounter a concept like "patriarchy" or "white supremacy" and as they come to understand it, they come to see things a bit differently and start to wonder "oh, wait, why do people do that? Maybe it isn't as harmless as I thought."

I think people take that process to mean there's an "unraised consciousness" and a "raised" one, and that the "raised" one necessarily means that the person will come to embrace/endorse certain views. And if they don't, they just need more "raising."

Rather than the idea that maybe someone had those experiences, thought about them, and came to different conclusions than the "raised" do.

(And sometimes it's only slightly different conclusions, too. That's the really crazy thing.)

Oh god, this. I wish people would stop telling me that just because I don't agree with certain theories and authors, I have internalized oppression/ am a horrible ally who should choke on her privilege.
