Well, granted they were just trolling, but I specifically take exception to the troll's (non)logic.

I tried reading Atlas Shrugged once, but I put it down after a few pages. I found the writing tedious and didn't think that being able to say I'd read some Rand was a good enough pay off for sticking with it, really.

Except it's perfectly logical- not having read Ayn Rand doesn't make it illogical. That's the point I'm trying to make, though I admit it's a pretty minor point. In the end it's not worth getting worked up over an insult that seems esoteric but in the end is just a cheap shot.

And you're right, Ayn Rand's writing style is arrrrgh.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
But regardless of whether or not I've read Ayn Rand, the problem is that growing up under a totalitarian government isn't the only way someone could come to believe that selfishness isn't bad. The sets of people who grew up under a totalitarian government and people who believe that selfishness isn't bad overlap, but I don't think the troll's implication that because I belong to the latter set, I must also belong to the former would hold up to classical logic.

(Sorry if this is boring you, btw, I just like discussions like this, but I'm not being all srs bsns about it, you know?)

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it's not the only way one could come to that conclusion. But you're insisting that the insult doesn't make sense, but it does. You said something that sort of jibes with Ayn Rand's views (regardless of whether you've read her or not) and some wag decides to make a snide remark declaring you must have come from a totalitarian state like Rand did. The statement itself is a fallacy, yes but it's not a nonsensical statement.

IMO you're overthinking what's ultimately a cheap shot.

(And I rather enjoy a discussion like this, even if it IS just an analytical debate over an insult... you're far more interesting that that troll who calls me "deaftool" every chance they get.)

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a nonsensical statement, no, but I still say it's not based on sound logic. I'm almost tempted to start drawing diagrams but that would definitely be overdoing it. *shrug*

Glancing over the rest of the comments to this secret, I'm just thinking, it could be worse. At least this isn't (more!) race wank.

(And thank you, I guess... you're certainly more interesting than the anon who made that Ayn Rand comment in the first place.)

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-02-28 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Well, nobody is arguing that it's not a fallacy, it's just not specifically a non-sequitur (which is what I meant by "it's perfectly logical" a few posts above, I should have worded that better.) It's essentially an ad hominem/association fallacy, but it's not really a non-sequitur in that it's easy to see how they reached the conclusion from the premise, as opposed to (to borrow from wiki) "if you buy this car you are protecting your family." They are associating your ideas with your background on the basis of Ayn Rand having similar ideas that stem from her background.

All this is really moot though- non-sensical or not, the troll is wrong. I really don't know why I care so much...
