It wouldn't be boring, just people would get brains. How do you think denial will help them later on? Take the Tokyo Mew Mew fandom, where rabid fangirls want to kill the nice boy and ship the main character with her evil perverted stalker. How do you think they'll turn out in real life?

I'm not trying to start anything here, but I think you're taking it too seriously. Fandom is separate from the real world and the majority of us understand that. Pairing characters together where the canon doesn't explicitly state that the two are in a romantic relationship will not make you any stupider or any more delusional than you were in the first place. :|
