I really wanted it to be about Grace being accepted into the tribe. so yes, reversed genders sound so much better! (I can kind of understand it for the historical one where there weren't many women fighters, etc. but in modern ones there's no excuse!)

Why don't you just watch it and switch the genders in your head? That's what I do when I want to shake up the material.

Haha, this is also my test for gender!fail. If I switch the genders, does everything seem way more interesting and authentic? Hmmm...

My English teacher in the 12th grade encouraged us to do just that with all characters. If merely switching the gender of the character drastically changes the perception of them, it's gender!fail.

She especially encouraged us to do this with our own.

Savage "colored" male/White Woman Heroine Learning That Noble Savages Are Nobler is pretty old trope. I don't understand the commenters on this thread acting like a genderswap would be something new.

I was just sitting here wondering myself how switching their genders would make the movie any different, too. (I liked "Avatar," but I really don't see how it would've been improved or worsened by genderswitch.)

Well, if a female Jake Sully followed the exact same route as the original Jake Sully, that would be interesting. Noble white woman who soothes the savage native beast with the force of her, idk, windswept poise and sparkling white looks is the cliche.

I agree that sounds more interesting, but as it is, I already prefered the female characters way more than any of the male ones so I'm not sure I'd wanna mess with that. If anything, I agree with what another commenter said about focussing more on Grace's acceptance into the clan. She was an awesome character, as was Neytiri, and even the pilot woman (I forget her name, but I'll just call her Ana-Lucia). On the other hand, I didn't like the main character. I didn't find him particularly interesting at all, more annoying than anything.
