The Mentalist feels like a bit of a rip off of everything. But I like it.
But they're skills are sort of different. Patrick Jane mostly just reads people and messes with their minds he's not trying to pretend to be a physic in the show. And it's more serious.

I think Jane and Shawn would get along. They both have an appreciation for the fun things in life.

I watched Mentalist before I watched Psych, I like the Mentalist but it's not my favorite show.

To be honest, Psych reminded me a lot more of Dexter, what with all the flashbacks to his father (and both fathers being in the police force...).

I don't understand why people keep saying Mentalist is a ripoff of Psych, really. Patrick Jane claims to not be a psychic and ridicules anyone who say they are, Shawn claims the opposite. Plus the tone of the two shows are noticeably different, and Patrick doesn't have a sidekick as awesome as Gus.

I haven't seen The Mentalist, because that main guy skeeves me out, I can barely stand him in the Devil Wears Prada let alone his own show, but I think when the show first came out I remember tons of advertisements that were bascially like, "HE'S SO SMART HE'S PSYCHIC" where it was basically acting like it was the serious version of Psych. So I think that's where people mostly get the impression from?

I find it so strange that people are skeeved out by him, I think he is handsome. And his smile is so pretty!

I've never seen any of the commercials for it, but that is probably one of the things that made people label it a ripoff. :( It's a shame, because the two shows really aren't similar at all!

I was a little skeeved out by him in The Devil Wears Prada too, but not in The Mentalist.

I wonder if was the role or he's just weird like that.

They don't have much in common. I would describe The Mentalist as essentially being a modern version of classic murder mysteries where the killer was found through simple deduction and observation.

Shit, I'm totally guilty of this too. Lol.

I've watched (and been a fan of) Psych since the first season, but I also like The Mentalist. I could see how a one-line summary could make them sound similar, but I don't think The Mentalist is a rip-off. Plus, even if you do think it stole the basic premise of Psych, that doesn't mean it cannot take that in an entirely different direction. (Sort of like how Angel took the basic premise of Forever Knight ("good vampire solves cases with the help of friends"), but managed to be a mostly original show overall.) The Mentalist is darker and deeper, with much more of a psychological element. So if you might be interested in a serious take on someone using hyper-observant powers to solve cases, I'd recommend at least trying it out. FWIW.

I used to be like this, until I caught an episode and then I fell in love with the Mentalist and dropped Psych. It has more drama and angst and Jane is so hot, plus TM has Lisbon and Psych doesn't. TM is generally a more entertaining and satisfying show, and the cast is so pretty.

This is the exact reason I've never watched The Mentalist, either. I feel like CBS saw what Psych did for USA, and the success they had, and were like "oh hey, can we do something that awesome?" I know there's a lot of shows with the same concept, how many hospital and cop shows can we have, but this was something completely original and it's not even a subtle rip off.

That was kind of the impression I was getting. Like I said, I've never seen the show, but. . .the summaries and descriptions I've gotten over the last couple of seasons has me like "wait a damn minute here."

What the fuck are you talking about, the Mentalist came two years after Psych.

Pfft, Patrick Jane is too busy being a ripoff of Derren Brown to fit any more conceptual theft in there.

Seriously, though, I've only watched a little Psych, but the two series feel completely different to me, and I enjoy The Mentalist a lot. I'd suggest at least giving it a go before you judge it. In the end, they've all nicked the idea from Sherlock Holmes, anyway; elements of unoriginality in a concept don't necessarily mean that something isn't worth watching.

Okay, I must ask. . .who is Derren Brown? :)

Well, and to be fair, most shows are rip-offs of some other show these days, but. . .it just annoys me when I start trying to explain Psych and someone goes, "the one with Simon Baker".

I'm like "no. . ."

To be fair, The Mentalist is probably easier to explain. People usually look at me weird when I try to describe Psych.

Derren Brown is a British mentalist! He has the same 'uses magic tricks and mental techniques but is always careful to insist that he's not actually psychic' attitude as Patrick Jane, and here is a clip of him using a confusion technique that Jane has used a couple of times.

I was just about to say this. It's like someone's watched a lot of Derren Brown but doesn't exactly know how the tricks are done. (Not that I DO know how most of his tricks are done, but there's less hypnotism/nlp than one would think.)
