Can't tell if this is a troll or not, but...

The whole premise of the movie is FAIL. Seriously offensive. (By which I mean, yes, I'm personally offended.) It makes me more than slightly ill that the book was written for the author's LD kid.

Were I that kid, I'd kick my own dad in the shins.

The book is nowhere NEAR as abelist as the movie. I thought it actually handled disabilities (at least the ADHD and Dyslexia thing) with some tact and nicety, rather than the film kept dropping terms like "cripple" and ugh. I can't even think about it. I enjoyed the book, but I almost walked out of the damn theatre with Percy Jackson I was so disgusted. Not to mention how they changed Grover's entire character to be one of the worst sex-crazed Black stereotypes and completely misunderstood everything there is to know about Greek Mythology.

Honestly, I haven't read the book. I've just read about it, so maybe I've gotten the wrong idea.

But if what I've heard is remotely close to the truth, I don't think I could stomach getting through it, regardless of how engaging the story or characters are...primarily BECAUSE the idea of re-writing ADHD and dyslexia into Speshul Sparkly Powars! (his "dyslexia" is really hard-wiring for Ancient Greek? languages don't work like that!) makes me want to strangle the author with his own intestines.

You don't get points for writing positively about disabilities if you first have to re-frame them as non-disabling.

It's hard to explain, I mean, I wouldn't say it was the best way to frame things in the book, but it actually acts like something that holds Percy up -- and instead of making it a super special talent it's more like this new things that he finds out lets him use something that usually is complicating to his regular life and sort of channel into something great.

I mean, I'm not saying the books are perfect, but they were nowhere near the level of fail the movie was.

What do you mean by "writing positively" about disabilities? Disabilities are not a wonderful human difference like, say, hair, eye & skin color. They are bad because they actually dis-able people from doing things, sometimes even from leading a dignified life, which is why they are called disabilities, which is why medicine and generally science ought to work on helping cripples become normal people - "able", as you'd put it. Also, political correctness is evil. "Cripple" is a perfectly normal term. It's the PC newspeak that's degrading. No cripple will stop being a cripple just because pretentious wankers insist on calling her or him "different".

Also, the Percy Jackson movie totally rocked:) "Abelist"? Well, a healthy nation totally should be abelist unless it wants to start losing international economic competitions and wars, which will absolutely *not* help that nation's disabled to live happily but will make them suffer along with, and more than, everyone else. That's why I'd think twice before using PC newspeak like "abelist" and all such crap. But people are free to dig their own graves of course.
