Agreed here... and funny thing - it seems like every nice long reboot fic I've liked? Goes downhill fast as soon as Kirk and Spock have slept together. Every single one. Perfectly enjoyable until they're doin' it, then the characters turn either stupid or mushy or both.

Hoping the one I'm writing doesn't have the same problem.

Oh, man, I agree. Not just with long reboot K/S fic, I've seen it happen with K/Mc, S/Mc, and S/U too. It's like a syndrome nu!Trek fic has, sex kills it.

Figures. I hadn't seen any lengthy stuff with other pairings that made any sort of sense yet (I guess I don't hang out in the right places), so I was unaware of this syndrome. :P

Nah, my Kirk was kind of an easy whore (for values of "easy whore" that equate to "likes sex but is creeped out by commitment so chooses only partners who are likewise just in it for the sex, even if he flirts with everyone") until he became a ~starship captain~ and decided he'd better act like he's taking his position as a representative of the Federation seriously, which he is.

I normally read stuff that's been rec'd Mostly because I'd given up on finding any good S/U on my own but tbh, it happens the most in K/Mc (really lengthy or not, post-coitus = characterization goes down the toliet)

Oh, nevermind, after squinting at it for a full minute I think I've discerned that it's "Home". You're more than welcome to your opinion, OP, but that's one of the best Star Trek reboot fics I've ever read. I mean, it's definitely not perfect but it's a great read. IMO, of course.

I've heard all good things about it but I am reluctant to read WIP's. I hate that they always leave me going !!!!!!!!! WHERE IS THE REST?!!!

I feel as if I would be letting myself in for a disappointment, even if it is as good as everyone says.

Be that as it may, I would still recommend it. While the characterization (particularly Kirk's) may strike me as a little off/exaggerated sometimes, it's still a well-executed story and worth a read.

I go back and forth on this fic a lot. I don't read a whole lot of K/S (I mainly ship Kirk/McCoy, but really, I'm up for Kirk/Anyone as long as the writer makes it believable) but this is one of the few I have read more than once, and I'm still torn about it. One hand, there's mostly consistent characterization and good grammar/spelling, but on the other hand, I don't really click with her characterizations as they are. Or, some of the plot lines. But it's a good fic, especially by the standards of some of the other K/S fic I've read. It's just not my cuppa tea.

I don't know if it's worth the epic review count, but that's not really my place to judge.

I have to say, I'm really surprised by the number of people who react negatively to this fic. I have been absolutely in love with this fandom since the release of the new movie, and after devouring every Kirk/Spock fic out there with a fanatic drive, I can say that even after the high of discovering the world of Star Trek has faded, hands down, Lanea's Home is, not only, the best fic I've read for nu!Trek, but also, one of the greatest fanfictions I have ever come across....

And that's saying something. :) I've been involved in various fandoms for quite some time, and while it's true my interest in Star Trek was spawned by the new movie, I've since done my best to make up for lost time (so many years wasted in ignorance), watching TOS, the older movies, and even reading some Star Trek novels. Believe me when I say that I am no easy critic; my years in fandom have hardened me, and I'm not as easily impressed as I once was.

Even so, for me, Home is the standard to which I hold all other fics-- the characterization, before and after they sleep together. has always been true and consistent, the plot (including the use of OCs) is completely in keeping with the spirit of Trek, and I just about die from happiness every time her Bones enters a scene.

It goes without saying that everyone is free to have their own opinions, but I'm afraid that I couldn't sit by and let this secret pass without a word of defense for Home. I cannot wait, personally, for it to update, and I look forward to it each and every day.

However, for the rest of you who don't feel this way, I really hope that you can find a fic you love as much as I love Lanea's works.
