"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice – a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice – is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other."

--John Stuart Mill

Agreed. There's a lot of things worth fighting for. There's surprisingly few things worth dying for. Almost everything is worth living for.

I would add to this, there are a lot of causes worth living for, and very very very few worth killing for.

It's not the dying that upsets me in the celebration of war, it's the killing.

I have heard it said that if you have nothing worth dying for, then you have nothing worth living for. While that's a bit over the top, it seems to generally apply.

But, surely, OP, you must have some sort of cause that you love? Or there's something in the world today that is wrong that you think should be fixed? We don't live on Pandora. That does not mean there are no battles to fight.

I never thought I'd see John Stuart Mill quoted in F!S. I feel weird. In a good way!

There are plenty of worthy causes out there, and you don't need to go into battle to support them. :)

Seriously! It makes me really angry to see people saying that they want to fight for the Na'vi when there are real indigenous people all over the world fighting exactly the same battle for control of their land and their own lives...pity they're not blue and safely experienced in a movie seat.

Get online and get educated, OP.

Yes! It might not look as glamorous in real life, but in the end it's far more fulfilling.
