120 & 160

120. Conan's being canonized, what? I'm just upset that he wasn't given much of a chance (and I do think he's funnier than Leno), and the nice guy finishes last apparently. He was a damn sight less shady than Leno, and took it hard, but stayed positive, and that's what I really took away from it.

160. Okay, so the response to disliking political views is to be closed-minded about it? I'm pretty damn liberal and I have conservative friends, shock and horror. I can understand that maybe you don't want the money you give them to go to organizations that are against your interests. A) You don't really know that's going to happen with your money, and B) this is you making the implication that conservatives can't be decent people. So to that I say

I know what you're saying, but I don't think there's anything wrong with being political about where you choose to spend your money. I don't know about dreamwidth, and I'm not really worried about them since they're a pretty small company, but I don't think there's anything wrong with, say, not buying Dominos pizza because they donate heavily to anti-choice causes. Yanno?

Understood! Actually, I don't buy from certain places because of that very reason, but the nature of the secret just said to me "no, fuck you, conservatives" more than "omg what are you going to do with my money?"...not sure if I'm saying this right. There seemed to be more emphasis put on the OP's revulsion of conservatism, and less put on what said conservative(s) would do with the money, and I suppose that's what I took issue with.

Yeah I see what you're saying. Just wanted to stick up for shopping politically. "The private is the political" and all that. :)

Domino's is pro-life? I didn't know that. I'll have to buy from them more often. :)

It's funny you're using that macro as a response. People who vote Conservative/Republican, regardless if they're just 'fiscal conservatives,' put people in office who take away the rights of others and are proud of doing so. It's nice that you have friends of all types in the political spectrum, but that's the reality of things.

Re: 120 & 160

[identity profile] vinylsigns.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I do recognize the difference of conservative friends/regular people as opposed to those in political power, a difference which is unfortunate, but I do respect the OP's decision on where to draw his/her lines with her money. I just mentioned above, I took more offense to what I perceived to be an automatic "EWW CONSERVATIVE" response above everything else.

And in this case we're not talking about some monolithic bloc of conservatives, nor some shadowy corporate overlords no one can name or access, we're talking about one person. Who is very open about what he believes, and even just started a discussion community about his particular brand of politics, which happens to be more classically conservative/small-l libertarian than Republican. If someone wants to know what his line of thinking is, it's pretty available to them. But it's easier to talk about things in the abstract and ignore that when your ideology is more important than the truth.
